Yeah I think you have to take a class first, but I was told that if you take the class you can jump solo your first time.

I'd be interested to see the statistics on how many people who attempted suicide and failed, tried it again later in life. I've read stories of people who survived the golden gate jump who said they regretted the decision instantly and wanted to stop the fall.

My thoughts are you don't have a clue. When someone is so depressed at the particular time they are, they are not thinking about "let me go skydiving". I am not sure if this thread is meant to be funny or what, but.. whatever.

Not meant to be funny. I'm thinking of it more as a social experiment. Obviously most people probably commit suicide on impulse but there are a lot of people that plan it out. this situation would be for those people.

I always said I'd rob a bank. a few 100 G might put a new outlook on life. Or a cop might put a cap in my arse. If so objective completed.

I would rather follow in Nick Cage's footsteps and leave Las Vegas with a hooker, blow, and alcohol.

Because either you're trying to speak honesty about something you know nothing about, or you're trying to make jokes about something you perceive as funny.

How do you know that I know nothing about it? Suicide is not uncommon and every situation is unique.

Maybe they're afraid of heights....

I bet you that most people that jump off a bridge are like " Oh frick ! What have I done ? " about halfway down. If they just go skydiving I think that most of them would pull the cord before they hit the ground. If they are really committed they can just hit the ground, but at least they will know for sure. Thoughts? ETA: Obviously this is a thought for people that are planning their own suicide. Not impulse suicide victims.

This is irrefutable evidence.

You don't (necessarily) have to do a tandem your first jump. AFF offers an alternate path that results in solo jumps from the start. Though you have two AFF instructors in the sky with you and you're not gonna get away from them. Those guys can move around in the air like I can on the floor.

Also, suicides make up a not insignificant percentage of skydiving deaths.

Was coming to post the same thing. Suicide by skydiving is going to require quite the commitment unless you're the instructor.

Passing the course might give them reason to live

One of the few people who survived jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge *immediately* thought that. It definitely happens.

OTOH there are some people who jump off a tall building, survive, and then try again. I personally know of such a case. He survived a 6 story fall the first time, and the day after he was released from the hospital found a 10 story building and finished the job.

had a friend that went solo his first time. It was a company in Lumberton, Ms.

He jumped with an AAD. And it was accelerated free fall, they don't just let you jump out the plane by yourself.

You can't go by yourself on your first try so the cord would be pulled whether you wanted to or not.
