I think it's cool on the Barrett Auction which the only time I'm actually exposed to it. They have their own individual styles and it's interesting.

The reason is to create an illusion there's more bidders or interest or value in a series of items than there really is. They work for the sellers, not the buyers. So let's assume your in a used car auction. The seller might want $4000 for a particular vehicle. There might be 5 people out of the crowd who want the vehicle that all think the vehicle is worth approximately $3000 and one who think's it's worth approximately $3500. So a lot of elements are at play. One being, the guy that's ultimately going to pay the most, think's he's on at 3000$ think's someone else is $3100, 3100,3200, 3300, and so on, when in reality no one has bid $3100. But the illusion is created that there is. Also, someone in that group may want to bid as high as $3000, but by the time the ringman or auctioneer recognizes his hand the bid is $3100+ That's in the case where there's no interest a above $2500, but the seller is seeking $4000, and the auctioneer knows the seller likely won't take under $3000.
In some cases he's just creating imaginary interest and boosting the number as high, fast, and confusingly as he can for the seller. The seller doesn't have to sell the item. And it add's pressure to the buyers to make a quick choice and be influenced by ego and peer pressure etc. "Well I want it and joe blow thinks it's worth $3500 so whats another $100" It's really designed more so in my opinion for the inexperienced buyers and to keep the sell of items moving fast.

Best auctioneer I ever heard sold me a "How to become a real auctioneer " book signed by him for $100. I felt like a sucker after I bought it but it felt good to win against the one other bidder.
