re: Why doesn't the IT department ever wear business casual?

Bingo!
I worked for a company where the owner got pissed about how far people took casual friday and changed the dress code so that all male employees had to wear long sleeve shirt and tie. Those of us in IT were exempt from wearing a tie for safety reasons, yet it didn't stop some whiny babies from complaining about it.

I've worked in places with dress codes ranging from coat and tie to jeans and t-shirts. Always felt more productive in the more casual attire.

But let's be honest, if you had a salesperson roll up to a new customer in jorts and a tank top you would probably have fired them
As long as they got the job done, it doesn't matter, but let's be honest, jorts aren't going to get the job done.

They do dress down the most out of any group as a whole, but eh. Doesn't really bother me. If my coworkers did, I would probably notice

Because only no skilled business majors need to worry about slacks and polo shirts.

Many years ago I interviewed at Perot's company in Plano, TX. You had to wear a dark suit every day.

Most days I wear slacks and a company polo. But I am also in charge of managing building maintenance tasks and overall building design which can be dirty/dusty. I'd rather not ruin nice shirts carrying dirty equipment.

Because the majority don't meet with anyone outside side of their department.
it's half this, and half having to crawl around on the floor plugging shite up that you unplugged, or climbing into server racks / server rooms. etc.
Some days I can get extremely dirty just from my day to day, and I would prefer to have jeans and a throw away shirt on when I'm doing it -
That being said, I always dress business casual and have a good washer and dryer, but most of the rest of my IT department wear jeans every day, and I don't blame them.
P.S: I'm running a packet sniffer now on the OP to make sure he's not posting this from my network, if he is, I'm blocking his access to TD

You know they just saw you start this thread, right?

I work for an ISP.. I wear a company Nike golf shirt w/blue jeans every day for work. Company policy says I can, so I do.. unless I need to meet with a client.
You mad?

Because cargos and a LOTR t shirt are hella comfortable.
When your server gets infected with Ukrainian ransomware because you were surfing midget porn, you won't be looking for a guy in khakis and a polo.

Never had salespeople. My company's rep for getting the job done took care of everything. Any company or company rep that judges work by wardrobe are fools at best.

Man, you're pissed about their clothes? I hate to see how mad you get when you realize they make more money than you.

I know an IT guy who works for a large organization in BR who lost everything on their network because of a deeply rooted Ukrainian virus stealing CC's and other personal information for 2 years before being detected. All of their backups had the virus meaning they had to wipe the drives and start clean.
All because one employee downloaded a "free" movie.

We keep them in a dark room at the end of a long hallway. They can wear what they want as long as they stay there during business hours

They think they don't have to follow the rules like everyone else?
Because on any given day we may be crawling around in the ceiling running cable, under your nasty-assed desk (seriously, vacuum under there once in while) or have to move dirty and heavy equipment. Why would I want to ruin a nice pair of khakis doing that when I can wear the more-durable denim?

Flip flops and torn jeans?

You did. They just weren't titled "sales".
