It's the southernmost route from coast to coast. Austin is not a logical part of that route.

Do any of you look at a map?

Neither is New Orleans. Yet I10 diverts down to pass through it with a seperate interstate built as the more direct route across.

Austin is the largest city in the US served by one interstate.

And it shows

Total lack of East/West expressways in the city.

Austin had 186,000 people when I-10 was designed. San Antonio had 587,000. There you go.

Louisiana made I-10 go through New Orleans instead of putting I-10 on the I-12 route and making the current I-10 through New Orleans a 3 digit spur route because making I-10 go through New Orleans has a positive economic impact for the city compared to if it was called I-310, 510, 710, 910, etc. At least that's what they say.

Even in the 70's, three Texas cities were in the top ten in the USA in population:
Houston
Dallas
San Antonio

Has nothing to do with the size of the city. The interstate highway system was originally planned as a strategic system of roads that would allow the transport of military vehicles and weaponry.

San Antonio was the obvious choice due to the military bases.

New Orleans is a port city , tons of ocean going cargo off loaded to trucks there, having Interstate access is a no brainer.

Austin traffic may be worse than BR traffic... but at least in Austin they are building new roads and trying to keep up.

Most of the growth has been north/south... I guess because of 35?

Where would you even put an east-west route? Expand 290? Isn't 290 to the east pretty much highway standards? Plus 71/290 to the west?

Keep in mind that the interstate system was built with the military in mind. San Antonio is a significant military city.

Even if San Antonio weren't as big they still would have put I-10 through it so they could transport troops and equipment to/from there.

290 gets you there SH130 is sometimes faster depending where you are going

Just spent the last 5 days in San Antonio and Austin. The SH130 is nice with its 85 and 80 mph speed limits even though most of the 85 mph areas had construction that dropped the limit to 65. Some of the 85 mph areas in the southern portion are in bad shape for that high of a limit, but I ended up maintaining that and some. Took US71 back to go through Houston and most of that was 75 mph. 290 goes further north so I don't know why anyone would want to use that to cut off time unless to avoid Houston all together.

I don’t know about I-10 but it is odd that there’s no major interstate highway between Houston and Austin. The nations 4th and 9th largest cities that happen to be what 150 miles apart? That don’t make no sense.
