It seemed like back in the 80’s/90’s, there was a shrimp truck on every corner starting Thursday thru the weekend. They would have 3 or 4 sizes for great prices.
I’m guessing cost of gas, but that expense hasn’t gone up that much. What use to cost you to drive from the coast to BR, $10, now costs you $25.
I cannot remember the last time I saw one in this area.

Cant speak as to LA but MS started requiring a dealers lisc and tracking for tax purposes, kind of killed it off.

Most never drove to the coast, they bought their shrimp from wholesalers that could afford to buy thousands of dollars worth of shrimp at a time right from the boats. My brother was a seafood dealer back in the early 90s, and had a lot of the roadside truck guys were his customers.

My uncle became a millionaire selling those printed red and white "Jumbo Shrimp" signs that are made to look like they are hand-painted. Great little scam.

About the only time I see what you would are referring is at the farmers' market on a Saturday morning. Besides that, people sell directly to restaurants or grocery stores instead of sitting outside in the hot sun all day.

I remember those. We even had a local butcher that would pass on Saturday morning. He had an El Camino with a big insulated box. Had any kind of meat you could buy at the butcher shop. You could hear him coming cause he would be tooting his horn rhythmically coming down the street.
That brings back memory’s!

I’m 99% sure it’s a tax license/health code thing.

There's a guy that sells downtown near the YMCA on Fridays that has good prices. He stops by my house on his way out of town and sells me whatever is left for a big discount. I think he drives in from New Iberia.

The lady on Lobdell near Jefferson in BTR was legit. She even had a sign "reserving" her spot for years. There's a stand at the Farmers Market downtown that has good shrimp (at least it did a year ago).

For that matter, you really don't see seafood markets like there used to be, either. Most grocery stores now handle seafood, maybe it killed them both off.

There's usually a guy on Gardere this time of year selling shrimp in one of the open lots.
