Why doesn’t Baton Rouge have one or two more parades before/after Spanishtown?

It’s the largest Mardi Gras crowd outside of New Orleans. I would think having another smaller parade before and/or after it would make for a great day in Baton Rouge.

Is it? I seriously asking. I’ve never been. Always thought St. Paddy’s was the big parade. Or was when I lived there.

Better yet, I’ve never understood why Baton Rouge doesn’t try to own St Patrick’s Day instead. Have a late afternoon/night parade that weekend as well.

And don’t tell me you’d be too tired after the day party.

Yes, Spanishtown parade is the largest MG parade outside NO area. It draws 100K+ people (probably closer the 200K)

Is Spanish town the only Mardi Gras parade in BR?

Spanish town would be so much better if they put some degree of Mardi Gras pageantry into it. It’s an extremely amateur truck parade that zooms by at 20 mph with drunk people who aren’t in costumes and don’t throw shite.

No, there are others. It's the last one, though.

Do you know what happens when you make something nice and invite the public in br?

Literally the point of the parade. It’s not supposed to be highly produced like a Blane Kern parade. It’s supposed to be irreverent. And it used to be much more risqué, bit the city bitched. Have you seen the Spanishtown Ball?

You can thank the city for that. They decided that it was too long and only allowed a finite number of entrants. It pretty much made them cut all the bands/walkers. The parade now travels too quickly.

New Orleans parades have something slightly similar - that’s why you see a bunch of tandem floats because they still count as only 1. However, New Orleans mandates that you have x number of bands/walking crews, and it can potentially hurt your future parades/permitting if you don’t have the required number.

They tried having one after Spanishtown at least once, I think with Neptune. Hardly anyone stayed for it (not sure they had even advertised it was happening).

Wait, Spanish Town isn’t on MG day?

Im starting to doubt OPs claim that BR has the biggest MG crowd outside of NOLA. How can you claim that without having a parade on MG day?

Umm no. The 100,000 estimate by the previous poster is wrong. BR has about 200,000. I think New Roads is even bigger than Houma as New Roads has 110,000. Houma’s parade goers are in a more concentrated spot and it makes it seem like it’s more.

As a 20 plus year rider I have to say, there is so much wrong with this statement I don’t know where to begin. You obviously don’t go to the parade. I used to ride in Endymion and it’s on par.
