Why does traffic on interstates ever come to a stop?

Insterstates specifically I10 goes from California to Florida. No redlights, no stop signs, no yields. If there is a wreck, you simply go around or move it out the way so traffic can pass. There should never be traffic on an interstate especially in Baton Rouge when its a straight road and there is nothing preventing traffic from moving forward. So why then, does it take 45 minutes to go from Siegen to Essen every day From 4-6? Are people that idiotic that they cannot merge on the interstate with out screwing up traffic?

Traffic is designed for half-blind old people with horrible reaction times to be able to drive safely.
Traffic engineers are still overestimating the average person's ability, unfortunately.

OTR trucker here, yes. I'm one of the good guys that stays to the right, but it gets absolutely annoying dealing with people merging onto an interstate at 35 mph when they've spent the entire time on the 1/2 mile ramp playing on their phones. Theyll get alongside a 70' long truck and freak out because I cant merge left so they can have the lane to merge in, which usually results in them slamming on their brakes and going to a near stop at the end of the ramp or flooring the pedal to come flying up my blind spot to cut me off.
Its infuriating. Use the ramps to get up to speed, folks.
ETA. If you're in the right lane cruising at 70 and a merge ramp comes up on your right side, dont slow down to 40 mph to let them in!!!

18 wheelers is your answer. Many times no 18 wheelers on the bridge , no traffic.

Orientals, women, retards, people on phones or driving junks that can’t go normal highway speed. It’s maddening. I swear the whole city of Houston shuts down whenever someone merges.
The worst is Westpark Tollway. It’s a freeway with few merges and few exits, and yet somehow people can’t go in a straight line. Most mornings there’s a traffic pileup due to idiots brake checking before exiting the tollway.
I’m getting pissed just thinking about it.

Do you ever post and drive?

Because Baton Rouge never got the proper representation in D.C to get the wheels rolling on modern infrastructure. There is NOTHING modern about any of I-10, I-110 or I-12 in the Br area.
They are about 2 lanes short east and west bound to be up to par. BR is a big area but it’s not that damn big. No excuses to why there should be standstill traffic everyday of the week.

The most frustrating part of it in ATL is when you're creeping along for 25-35 minutes and expect some horrific wreck or something when you reach the point where traffic is clearing and there's...nothing. Traffic just magically clears. No tow trucks. No cops. No bumpers lying on the roadway. There's just this magic point in the road where the congestion clears.

Because one tractor trailer gets in the left lane of a 2 lane interstate and tries to pass another trucker and ends up riding side by side for 20 miles at 45 mph
