I've never seen a "heat advisory" up here, with the exception for when it was in the upper 70s/low 80s for the marathon and they were warning the runners to be careful.

JULY 20, 2017
A heat advisory will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday in southeastern Massachusetts, the National Weather Service said.
The advisory is also in place across most of mainland Rhode Island, which is also under an air quality alert for potentially unhealthy standards of ground level ozone concentrations until 11 p.m.
A heat index value in the mid 90s is expected in Bristol and Plymouth counties due to a combination of temperatures in the low 90s and dewpoints in the upper 60s, forecasters said.
A heat index value under those conditions warrants “extreme caution” with regards to the “likelihood of heat disorders with prolonged exposure or strenuous activity,” according to the weather service. It is the second day in a row with a heat index reaching the mid 90s.

Temperatures in Boston are expected to reach the high 80s Thursday, officials said. Temperatures Friday will likely reach 90 degress.

I have uhp summer tires on a rwd sports car. Driving on ice scares me.
What scares me more is other people driving on ice.

Exactly.
The northeast isn't as equipped as the south to handle tropical storms, just like the south isn't equipped to handle snow. It's not that complicated.

I must not be on their e-mail list because I honestly have never heard of that being a thing.
Again, I stand corrected.
Although, I'll point out that I don't believe government offices were shut down for that.

There's no snow plows or salt for roads. We also have a ton of bridges. You know, those raised things that freeze quickly. Put that together with people having no idea how to safely drive the snow and it's obvious.
Plus the real issue is icing and nobody can drive on ice well. You ever notice how ice is really slippery? Ever notice how you need friction to turn or stop? Yeah...

Probably because hot weather doesn't render streets undrivable and require machines to make them safe.

Why does snow close the South? by rpg37
Same reason NY closed down for few days during 92 degree heat wave. Can't handle it.

Northerners are pussies. Look at superstorm Sandy. You can burn shite or wear more clothes when it’s cold. What ya gonna do when your balls are welded to you taint after a hurricane?

Most people in the North don't either and I've never known anybody to use snow chains outside of mountainous areas. My parents just got around 6 inches of snow and drove to work in their cars.
Well, we have a lot of bridges down here....you really cant go anywhere once the bridges get ice on them....plus we dont have snow plows and our pipes and plumbing isnt made to withstand the freezing temps

yep people die from snow too....so your point? seems to me its just more to the point that it is an issue of lacking experience and equipment on how to deal with it so again....south shuts down for snow for the same reasons the north cant handle a storm.

Why do you have yankee friends?
You sir, are not a true southerner.

in my experience snow doesnt even close the south at all.
schools shut down because some kids honestly wont be able to safely make it there and everyone knows missing 2 days of school isnt gonna make a difference at all in the big picture.
OP acts like taking a few days off to save lives is somehow making us pussies, when in reality everyone could use a day or 2 off every now and then

Can you go buy the salt trucks for us?

New York city had tons of closures just a few weeks ago from a snow storm, and they are pretty damn prepared to handle it.
Was nice working from home though. The issue isn't really the snow, the issue is when it goes from above freezing to below and everything ices over.
Not worth the risk
new york also has salt on every road, plows on every garbage truck, etc. Hell, even the subways weren't fully running though

My point is 106 people don't die from a pussy storm. New York and New England flooded a good bit. Subways and tunnels were underwater.

this. We barely got a dusting.
