Lol where?
It has happened twice in Alabama this year. (This year being Winter 2017-18).

It's not a blizzard. We shut things down the day before for the threat of snow. The threat!
Adding a day or two at the end of the school year versus having a law suit against the school district because a bus slides off the road due to black ice killing or hurting kids because a school superintendent decided to they didn't want to be a pussy, I'd take adding a day or two to the end of the school year all day long.
It's really not a hard decision to make. Schools have like a week of contingency days for all kinds of weather events anyway. Might as well use them.

Yeah. The south laughs when places like Wisconsin issue "heat advisories" when it's 91 deg
I've never seen a "heat advisory" up here, with the exception for when it was in the upper 70s/low 80s for the marathon and they were warning the runners to be careful.

Up north they are used to it. They can drive in it. Here, it becomes more of a safety issue.

Remember a couple years ago when 150,000 cars were stuck on the interstate in Atlanta because the snow and ice shut them down?
That's why.
That's why.

So? Twice or even three times a year getting an inch of snow or ice in no way justifies spending hundreds of thousands/millions into maintaining snow equipment and salt year round. It’s way better to just have a couple extra days added to the school calendar to plan for it
It’s really not complicated. I question your intellect and reasoning potential if you struggle with this

Why does this thread come up every time this happens?
Better question is why are Southerners so defensive about this?

Because we dont have the necessary equipment to make roads safe, because we get it so infrequently it would be a waste of money.
Because we usually get snow that melts and turns to ice.
Because people around here cant drive worth a shite when it is sunny and 80*. Add in some snow and ice and its like they are blind race car drivers.

You've got a lot of kids that have to be transported home. You can't wait until the roads are iced over and the kids are in school to stick your finger up your arse and say "Now what?" It's called being prepared and understanding that it is far less trouble and costly to close schools for a day than risk endangering people.
What the frick man? You don't want to go home? You don't have to.

And all the runners from the south whom participated laughed their asses off at that.
Thanks for proving the point.

Because everyone, regardless of geographic region, hates stupid questions

Two or three salt trucks for Tuscaloosa wouldn't cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are like three bridges. Prioritize those and the other major streets and presto -- the town doesn't shut down.

My thought exactly.

#1 The vast majority of residents in the South do not have proper tread on their tires to drive in icy conditions.
#2 The vast majority of municipalities in the South do not have the proper snow/ice removal equipment or sand for roadways.
#3 People don't know how to drive in icy/snowy conditions in most areas of the deep south.

Why spend money on that when the city with the highest annual snowfall total is 2.4 inches?

Well it was more for the older runners who come from all over the world, but you keep on feeling like you're right.
