Jackson, like every major city, has parts of it that are indistinguishable from third world countries. However, the immediate surrounding areas have some of the nicest places to live, good schools, good people. I’ll never live in the 9th ward in NOLA like I wouldn’t live in the slums of Jackson all the same. Jackson gets shite on a lot here despite the majority of the people are from NOLA, BR and Shreveport.

This.

I’ve lived here since ‘04 and I like it, well enough. If you stay out of the hood, it’s fine. My biggest complaint is that for those not in the hood, it’s a small town fishbowl where everybody knows everybody’s everything.

Jackson’s got some serious problems, I won’t deny, but it’s an urban center in a Southern state. People arguing which city is better; NOLA, Baton R, Memphis, Atlanta etc is like stray dogs arguing over which one has fewer fleas.

City proper itself is a toilet but there are some nice suburbs on the outskirts and it actually has a better corporate climate than New Orleans.

Those suburbs suck. Madison and Flowood were pastures that were turned into cookie cutter neighborhoods, strip malls and big box stores. No exaggeration, there is ONE non chain restaurant in Flowood.

I’m talking about Fondren and the the area East of I55, north of Lakeland and South of Old Canton Road.

Jackson has a unique problem that it’s southern counterparts aren’t saddled with. The 1970’s Ayers Case was a giant suckhole lawsuit involving underfunding of HIBC in MS. As a result, a perimeter (I can’t remember the mileage) was established around JSU prohibiting any state school from holding classes. In a nutshell, JSU is the only state funded 4 year school in Jackson. Imagine Memphis without Memphis State. Birmingham wi/o UAB.

The inner city is horrible. Even the nice areas like Eastover and Fondren are declining. As mentioned above, the suburbs are all built on floodplains and are cookie-cutter houses and strip malls. Zero character.
It does have very good restaurants for its size.

Human nature, makes them feel better about their own shitehole. Jackson is an easier target of comparison than Mogadishu.
