Hitler killed other people. Stalin killed his own people (except for Nazis, Chinese, and Japs).
I finally watched "Apocolypse Stalin" that I had on DVR. Good shite; check it out
Eta: Funny thing is that he amd Hitler had a deal going on. Hitler broke the deal by invading, so they went to war. The world would be a completely different place had Hitler not invaded Poland

This + the fact that Stalin mostly killed his own people
Were they really his own people, though?

He fought his way to be in charge of that territory, and fought to defend it from invaders. Lots hated him, but I'd bet they hated Nazis more

Doesn't that make him an invader, too? Sounds like the fine folks of Eastern Europe got continually fricked regardless.

Which is why Ukrainians and Poles tried to retreat with the German army when the Soviets turned the tide, and why many Russian POWs offered to fight for the Germans.

And weren't many of those chosen people German citizens? I guess they don't really count themselves as "belonging" to any country. At least, not since they made up the story about escaping Egyptian captivity.

I think the fact Hitler sort out to kill people of a certain religion played into why Hitler has become more polarizing and it was related to WW2.

Stalin and Kaganovich tried to wipe out Christianity in the USSR and targeted Orthodox priests, temples, and devout citizens.
But there aren't many Russian Orthodox outside of Russia who own newspapers, broadcasting stations, or movie studios.

Both evil, but Hitler was at war with our main allies (Britain and France) and a lot of us have parents or grandparents who served in World War 2, so lot easier to hate the guy our side was fighting against.

The Japanese make both look like a saint.

Hitler lost, and his enemies wrote the history books.
Stalin and Mao both won, and were therefore able to operate insular regimes in an age where the flow of information could be relatively easily controlled. Their atrocities were much less thoroughly documented as a result, and the world did not become aware of them until later, when the passage of time had rendered them less impactful.
Also, like it or not, there is a difference in perception between political killings intended to solidify power for a ruling party and genocide. Especially to the modern mind, one is at least comprehensible, even if it remains reprehensible. The other takes the modern cardinal sin of intolerance to its full extreme.

"his own people"? Well, the Ukranians might argue that.

Why does Hitler get more hate than Ghengis Khan?
