Sharing is caring is generally a bad idea. IRL what and when do you "share"?
Posted on 10/15/14 at 12:01 pm to rebeloke
because most young children don't share, it's instinct

there are selected traits of altruism that developed via evolution. sharing is part of it. i forget the technical term

The more you give, the more you get. Life is not just take, you also need to give. Giving makes life more fulfilling, unless you're just a psychopath.

Time, money, advice. When I have it to give and think it's for a good cause.
What's a good cause? Depends upon one's perspective.

I share my paycheck with Uncle Sam every month.
He in turn shares with 108 million welfare recipients.

Because otherwise they end up as horrible roomates. Also, Children need to be taught to share with those who don't have what they have so they better understand Earned Income Tax Credit and EBT cards.

altruism
Doesn't exist. The fact it developed via evolution proves it's not really pure altruism, but rather just another mechanism to extend survival in order to pass on one's genes.

quote:
reciprocal altruism is a behaviour whereby an organism acts in a manner that temporarily reduces its fitness while increasing another organism's fitness, with the expectation that the other organism will act in a similar manner at a later time.

I know what you're talking about. Interesting reading. I don't remember the specific term, but we studid evolutionary or biological altruism in the ethics blocks at a seminar I attended years ago.

So they're not jealous and hurt when they end up having to share women like your Mother later on in life.

Do you think the OP was talking about sharing in terms of biology? No, you just wanted to sound smart. I've never even read Rand. It's common sense.

Thanks for proving my point again, pseudo-intellectual.

I don't teach my kids to share. They are very young, so the only things they fight over now are toys, but I tell them that they get a turn when the other one is finished. Early bird gets the worm sort of approach. I also teach them to help, whether it be cleaning up or whatever else. There are ways to teach kids how to be caring and helpful without teaching them to expect things to be given to them.

This is a vapid question even for a college student.

I wish rebeloke didn't share his thoughts with the OT

So should I give to make myself feel better, or should I give so I can receive more? Which one is it?

Do whatever you want. Nothing matters no one matters but you.
