Why do we switch back and forth between metric and imperial for soft drinks vs. milk?

“Go to the store and pick up a 2 liter of coke and a half gallon of milk.”

Why do Americans do this?

For the same reason when shooting/hunting I use meters and driving I use miles.

I’ve been a proponent of switching to metric for a long time. However whenever someone provides something to me in kilometers or centigrade I always have to convert it in my head.

Because we're fat and need an extra 3.6 fl oz of high fructose syrup.

because saying 1 gallon is easier than saying im going to pick up 3.79 liters of milk.

Or im going pick up .26 gallons of coke, ill be right back.

Now i have no idea why companies went with this, like why did they decide on 1 gallon for milk instead of just selling by the liter?

Companies know we failed at the metric system.

There's no reason not to use whatever we want to. It's not like any of this shite was handed down to Moses on stone tablets. A "degree" or "inch" or "kilopascal" is completely arbitrary.

Muh water boils at 100 degrees Celsius... OK? You think that's meaningful because you have 10 fingers, but how enlightened is counting on your fingers?

This weekend's weather was great. Don't think it ever got above 295 Kelvin.

Why do I need a set of standard and a set of millimeter sockets?

No doubt, my first exposure to the metric system was probably an episode of COPS with them searching a trunk and finding “several kilos” of cocaine.

My personal idea is that in the middle/late 70s when we made the push to switch to the metric system kids were the most interested in it except for maybe adults with pocket protectors. Switching soft drinks with their high kid appeal made sense. I remember when they changed it was the first time I was remotely interested in large bottles of soda.
