Why do we feel the need to have ‘favorites’

People often ask us “what is your favorite band”
“What is your favorite player”
“What is your favorite movie”
I just can’t help but wonder why there is such a societal need to have a favorite. Sometimes, we naturally do have a favorite. Sometimes we really don’t. Can’t we love something and appreciate something without having to rank it against everything else we’ve ever encountered?
I just feel like it’s intellectually dishonest sometimes
“What is your favorite player”
“What is your favorite movie”

Those conversations usually center around figuring out someone's personality or trying to find common ground. They're basic conversation starters. No biggie.
