they're still perfectly usable and can be updated/renovated from time to time.
Do you know how much that cost is? You would spend better than 50% of the cost of a new stadium to upgrade/renovate an old stadium and still it wouldn't be up to par.

The Georgia Dome was built before cellphones were common, much less smartphones. Mercedes-Benz has something like five miles of fiberoptic cable in it to support a public wifi network that can allow everyone in attendance to stream HD video to their phones. To retrofit the GA Dome to that would have been impossible.

They also could not move the lower level seats back to accommodate a wider field needed for soccer - a must if Atlanta is going to be a player in the next US bid for the World Cup.

One of the biggest moneymakers in the stadium are the luxury suites. While they could have upgraded the existing ones (to a degree) they couldn't add more - but they could with the new building.

Nothing comes close to the coliseum and the events that were held there.

We should bring some of those events back.

Despite the best effort of the pope, which makes it more amazing it is still standing.

Did any preservationist try to save old Tulane Stadium?

Watched many a Sugar Bowl and even more Saints games from there on TV.

They tried it about 16 years ago when Foster was the governor. Foster basically told Benson to get real that no state money was going to go for building a new stadium on the NOLA riverfront. In the end Foster gave Benson a sweetheart deal with the dome....then a few years later.....Katrina and what amounted over time as a brand new Superdome with lots more wonderful suites

If being a shitty stadium is reason for getting demolished then their new a-hole stadium must be worried.

I don't recall which pope. the tour guide at the coliseum said that the marble which made up the facade was robbed to build much of Renaissance Era Vatican City, including the Basilica. It all could be bull shite, it's just what the tour guide told us.

The Roman Coliseum isn't 2000 years old, it's estimated that construction began in 72 AD and finished around 80 AD.

So, roughly 1937 years old? 2000 is close enough, nerd.
