8 home games times 25 years = 200 games...throw in some concerts and you have 400 events in 25 years.

You aren't counting preseason and playoff games, SEC championship game, Peach Bowl, trade shows, etc. That dome held a lot more than 400 events over 25 years.

Georgia Dome was destroyed today after 25 years.

This does baffle me why we allow so much tax money to be used to build these domes and stadiums, then tear them down after only 25-30 years when they're still perfectly usable and can be updated/renovated from time to time.

But if its not being used for anything anymore, then why keep paying millions of dollars in upkeep to avoid it falling into disrepair when it can be torn down and have the land put to some other use?

Astrodome is still here. Looks like shite, generates nothing of value, and takes up a huge amount of valuable property.

Apparently with asbestos problems it would cost more to demo the building that it does to just pay property tax and let it sit. Sort of like the old Capitol Hotel in downtown BR that similarly sat unoccupied for decades.

It is cool to watch them 'come down'...

What was wrong with it? It seemed perfectly fine to me.

I've only been there for a couple of SEC Championship games, about ten Saints/Falcons and the GA state high school football playoffs one year. I thought it was great for football. The sideline seats were closer to the field than the Superdome. The MARTA station is next door. There's a ton of hotels, restaurants and bars in the immediate area. It worked just fine for me.

I understand the logic behind the new stadium arms race, but never thought of the GA Dome as a shitty stadium.

The Roman Coliseum isn't 2000 years old, it's estimated that construction began in 72 AD and finished around 80 AD.

The arena in Verona is older by about 40 years.

Eventually the state of Louisiana is going to have to build a new Superdome

How much has been spent on Superdome renovations and upgrades since Katrina? It's over $500 million, I'm sure. Might be closer to $800 million. Not enough to build a new JerryWorld type stadium, but it's not like the 30 year home mortgage is paid off and now it's just maintenance, insurance and utility expenses.

And go refresh your memory, Benson was lobbying for a new stadium before and after Katrina. He finally let up when the state paid him enough greenmail to satisfy him.

It must be astronomical considering the potential revenue of a new property right in the middle of Reliant park.

Judge Emmet has basically said he's done trying to do anything with it. It will be there until he's gone, according to him. Not b/c he loves it, but b/c he doesn't want to be known as the guy he preserves/destroys it.

We built shite, tear it down and replace it with more shite.

People are dazzled by new, that don't give a shite about stuff that lasts. It's bad for business. New stadiums probably have a 20-30 year life now

I think this is the correct answer.

There’s an arms race when it comes to stadiums. Jerry’s world set the standard and now everyone has to keep up to get big ticket events. For the cost of renovating an old stadium you can build a new one.

Plus, placing MSB in Cobb county makes it a little more accessible to the “wealthier” parts of the metro area.

And could easily have been turned into Houston Dynamo's new soccer stadium.

Scrap the paint off the roof, put grass (back in) it (it originally had it until the roof painting killed it), tear out an upper deck of seats, and voila!

But no, they had to "redevelop" an area of town nobody in their right mind would visit at night (or likely even in daylight).

The state will "have" to do no such thing, and won't, if anybody outside the city of New Orleans has a vote.

i was quite displeased with the demolition of my favorite stadium.
as a kid, i would stare up at it and thought it was the most beautiful building in the world.

Because NFL owners fleece local taxpayers and hold them hostage with threats of relocation just so they can say they have the newest, most expensive stadium.
