Why do “squatter’s rights” exist? It’s beyond messed up.

Imagine you went on vacation, and when you returned, some homeless people broke into your house and changed the locks and decided to live there. Legally, they can and you’re not allowed to throw them out and the police can’t do anything either. You have to go through the eviction process to legally remove them from your property.

This might just be the dumbest and most infuriating law in existence.

Here’s an article about this exact scenario happening, and there’s many more articles out there about similar events:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.koaa.com/news/news5-investigates/2017/09/07/squatters-take-over-mans-home-while-hes-out-of-state/%3f_amp=true

I mean, it’s one thing if we’re talking about abandoned houses that have been unoccupied and neglected for years... but a person away on vacation is totally different.

hard to prove how long squatters have been living in your vacation home if you kill them first

It’s like the stupid law that says a kid born to people here who snuck across the border illegally is automatically a US citizen.

How in the world is this not an immediate arrest for criminal breaking and entering, trespassing, and theft?

Definitely one of the stupidest laws I’ve ever heard of

Actually, it's not even close to same thing.

However, other squatters were not shy to taunt Hawkins.

“I’ve already talked to the police,” one squatter said. “We have another week before we legally have to be out of here.”

That news didn’t sit well with Hawkins.

“I’m a legal owner of the property but I can’t access it because these squatters have more rights than I do,” he said.

He’s right! According to the law, he can’t enter his own home without having permission from the squatters. He also can’t throw their stuff away without first evicting them.

“Look at this mess,” Hawkins told one squatter after he let him inside.

“Here’s your house,” the squatter replied. “It’s all f****d up!”

How pissed would you be?

What pisses me off more than people doing curls in the squat rack are people that occupy the preacher curl bench that are just using the bar.

Soy boy was in there yesterday doing upright rows with a preweighted 30lb bar at the preacher curl bench because he was too lazy to stretch another 2ft to set it down on the floor.

I put a stop to that shite with the quickness.

Oh...and, at least in Texas, the squatters must have been there for 10 years to have gained adverse possession. If not, you can have them evicted, arrested.

The FAQ section at the bottom of the article is insane. If the squatters leave, you can’t throw out their stuff.

Pretty much the same deal if you let a broad shack up at your place.

Did once and never will again.

They had this situation pop up on an episode of Live PD... and I believe it was with 1 of the Florida agencies where it happened.

owner called the cops to get some squatters out of their vacation house (I believe it was a snowbird from Massachusetts)... cop basically said I can't do anything... you have to go through civil court and and evict them

I got so pissed off watching that segment... squatters laws should not exist

I thought so too, but look it up. It’s happened to many people, and it’s infuriating reading about it.

This isn't really how it works, at least in most places.

The story you linked involved an absent owner who rented to someone who invited the squatters (allegedly).

You're not leaving for a Carnival cruise and having to evict people who broke into your house

The laws are bad but so are the police’s decisions. When the property owner tells you this person was not invited and is not allowed in the property, you don’t just throw up your hands and say “what can I do?” simply because the squatter makes up a bullshite story that they were “invited in” by someone else. If an officer reasonably believes the owner is telling the truth and the squatter is lying, then the officer should order the squatter out immediately or face arrest.
