I tend to go the other way.

I grew up here, both my parents have southern accents. I somehow don’t have one. I didn’t try to not have one. I just try to speak phonetically.

For a lot of my youth reading was the only way I realized that my parents weren’t enunciating their words correctly. I’d hear them say something, realize I read the word in a book and that they weren’t saying it correctly, wonder why they weren’t, and then choose to say it correctly.

I guess I don’t understand knowing that a word is pronounced a certain way and then choosing to say it another way.

I’ve always been impressed with skreet vs street and credick vs credit. I mean those don’t even sound close to me but people seem to accept and understand them as interchangeable in many areas.

gm Clean

Is it really in terminal decline, or is it just a pigment of our imagination?

it goes back to Chaucer, I believe he used "ax" instead of ask to denote lower class people.

Can't tell you how many times I heard "Put your dishes in the zinc" when I was a kid because I guess it was too hard to pronounce "sink" correctly.

There's also "ersters" for oysters and although the word "ask" is often mispronounced, you've not heard anything butchered so bad as when the word "asks" in uttered-------can't count the times it comes out as "a sses"
