Why do some companies remind you you're on hold every 30 seconds

I get doing it every couple of minutes espeically if they're updating you on how close you are to getting a person. But good lord I'm on hold right now and every 30 seconds music cuts out and someone reminds me I'm on hold and thanks me for calling. This is horrendous.

God I can't imagine using a third world company that doesn't have online chat in 2020.

Our company changed to every 33 seconds after too many complaints from the Karens of the world...

I had to call AT&T the other day to renew our small business plan. No option to chat, you had to talk to somebody. The guy was working from home and his kid was running around screaming in the background.

Because their systems have a tendency to hang-up on you, and that lets you know you're still connected before they transfer you to a live person, who will also accidentally hang-up on you.

to trick you with the illusion they were about to pick up the phone
the research suggests if they dont do that you hang up much faster but if they pop in your brain resets the "i'll only wait so long" instinct within you

There’s a place in hell for companies that make you wait on hold for 20 minutes or more, then tell you all operators are busy and you need to call back.
