These two "points" together show how little you have thought about this or well you are pretty dumb.

The whole point of the 4.5 and 5.0 scales in high schools (mine was using it over 30 years ago) is to assign extra value for relative difficulty of the class, that thing you were screaming for earlier in your tirade.

For you to begin to sway me you will need to give specific examples of how the current system is not working.

The real problem here is that an “A” or 4.0 at a school like Episcopal or BR High is the same as an “A” or 4.0 from choose any random public school in EBRP. When we all know that the expectations for meeting that standard were completely different. Yet TOPS and places like LSU are only concerned with did you hit the GPA requirement. I think ACT and SAT help to weed out the biggest phonies, but how sad that someone can graduate at the top of their class and only manage an 18 or 19 on the ACT. This is where GPA is meaningless

public college prep magnet high school

They must be disappointed that you're only a nurse. You could have gone to the non-magnet portion of Scotlandville and taken zero honors courses and still done that.

With that being said, I respect nurses. Thanks for your hard work.

You think people MIGHT be able to differentiate between Episcopal and EBRPSS?
Surely you aren't that stupid

Some schools give partial points for "+" and "-" grades. When I attended LSU they did not. I think now they do...

This is a good thing, IMO. Because an 89.44 in most classes is a lot different than a 79.45.

Grade Point Average is like a batting average

I want you to expound on this point. In what way is GPA like a batting average? Other than, yes, they are both averages...like, how did you come up with this comparison?

Most schools consider AP classes on a 5 point scale.

My HS did it in a 6 pt scale. Honors classes were 5 pt

With all the advanced metrics that have been developed for sports and finance, why hasn't anyone been able to devise something better than plain ole GPA?
Because all these "advanced metrics" suck.

Sorry bout your 2.5.

This is a good example of the problem with grade inflation, not many years ago the majority of students would be graduating with a 2.5-2.8 GPA and, today those same students would have a 3.2-3.5 GPA and think they had actually accomplished something.

Q: Who is a more productive batter?

Player A: .300
Player B: .270

A: Without more information, it's impossible to tell

If on;y schools were required to report these things in order for colleges to better asses the meaning of the GPA and maybe send the actual transcript so colleges can calculate the unweighted GPA if required.....

So you complain about this....

quote:

GPA doesn't take into account the relative difficulty or subject matter of different classes

Then complain about this...

quote:

We have schools engaging with in GPA frickery by exceeding the 4.0 scale to artificially inflate their students GPAs

Isn’t giving an extra quality point for AP or Honors classes taking into account the relative difficulty of the classes?

For college, you can specifically look at your major GPA and exclude all the electives and other junk that don't really matter.

GPA is useless in high school.

It's useless in College too unless your GPA is abysmal. No job is going to really care what your GPA was, and post-graduate degree admissions weight whichever test (LSAT, GMAT, GRE, etc.) waaay more than they do grades.

GPA doesn't take into account the relative difficulty or subject matter of different classes -- 3 hours of organic chemistry is equivalent to 3 hours of music appreciation -- nor does it factor in the relative workload -- you could have a class that involves immensely more outside-the-classroom work than similar classes taught by different profs.

This statement is directly in conflict with

quote:

We have lots of schools (mainly high schools) engaging in GPA frickery by exceeding the 4.0 scale

Those students are awarded extra points for taking MUCH more difficult classes than people like you took so that your good grade in shop class doesn't carry the same weight as their class in college freshman level physics.

ETA - Tigrrr dad beat me to it.

Scotlandville was still an all magnet school (thank GOD) when I went there. No dumb regular kids were allowed to attend back then. And I didn't take any AP classes when I went there cause I didn't want to. Of course, looking back I would have told my high school self to suck it up and do the work.
