Why do schools still have the nearly meaningless GPA metric?

Grade Point Average is like a batting average -- it doesn't come close to giving you a complete assessment of a student's performance. It's just a way to pigeon-hole everyone into the same box, and even so, it does a terrible job of it.
GPA doesn't take into account the relative difficulty or subject matter of different classes -- 3 hours of organic chemistry is equivalent to 3 hours of music appreciation -- nor does it factor in the relative workload -- you could have a class that involves immensely more outside-the-classroom work than similar classes taught by different profs.
Then we have the problem of different profs giving out vastly different average and median grades for the same classes.
We have lots of schools (mainly high schools) engaging in GPA frickery by exceeding the 4.0 scale in order to artificially inflate their students' GPAs. So the scale isn't normalized to the same number for all schools.
Some schools give partial points for "+" and "-" grades. When I attended LSU they did not. I think now they do...
With all the advanced metrics that have been developed for sports and finance, why hasn't anyone been able to devise something better than plain ole GPA?

For college, you can specifically look at your major GPA and exclude all the electives and other junk that don't really matter.
GPA is useless in high school.

I only got a 2.3 because I wasn't challenged enough. I was to smart for school

it would probably violate the Civil Rights Act, for one thing
similar to fixing gerrymandering in the South (and how it would violate the VRA)

I only had a 2.0 in high school because I did not study and did not care. I will study once I go to college and will be a 4.0 student.

Sorry bout your 2.5.

I don't necessarily disagree, but what is a better system? Also, people hiring are smart enough to figure out a lot of your complaints. For example, Auburn is notorious for actually giving the average student a C so their GPAs are lower. That's taken into account when looking at their transcript.
Point is, I think your complaints are valid, but I also think with 5% more effort it's not that big of a deal.

Sorry you weren't smart enough to be able to take AP classes in high school.

I took 2 or 3 AP classes, but my school didn't go above 4.0 for anything. Should I be mad?

Sounds like an issue with your school then. Most schools consider AP classes on a 5 point scale.
I went to a public college prep magnet high school. All of our AP classes were on a 5 point scale.

As someone mentioned. Most graduate programs only look at your last 60 hours or core specific classes to your degree when judging GPA.
Meat grinders like intel and Samsung will care though. But those places suckkkkkkk

Any GPA above a 4.3 (A+) is bullshite. It’s just inflation but I’m sure repealing it will be some civil rights issue

Because its racist and they enjoy oppressing people

LSU didnt do this when I was there. I actually had to hand calculate it for a couple of different applications.

No. IIRC there were a couple of colleges that specifically disregarded all of the 4.0+ nonsense and brought everyone down to the same level, then arranged students by class difficulty in determining eho was in and out.

This kind of thinking is moving in the right direction rather than blindly relying on GPA

No one actually compares someone who took music appreciation to someone who took organic chemistry. You think a music major working as a claims adjuster for Greg the GoAutoguy is compared equally to a doctor, even though they had the same 3.8 gpa?
This is why we list majors. If you’re really competing directly for a job with someone that has a completely different major than you, you’re probably looking at a shitty insurance job
