Maybe he doesn't have the best job, but he has drug connections to where he always has good weed. If she's into something more, he may just have "friends" that make it easy for her to get the good stuff from in trade. Lots of ways for a chick to use a man.

You do realize that plant baws typically make around 6 figures, and often much more? Guys I went to HS with were making 70-80k/year at age 20. By 25, they’re well beyond 100k/year. Considering most rural folk marry in their early 20’s, no one who doesn’t have “daddy’s money” or a f$&king oil well in their front yard is richer in their early 20’s than plant baws.
And besides, a hs coach will have outstanding health insurance and a bomb pension, not to mention social prestige if he’s at least decent at his job.
Typically, small town couples have two earners with different kinds of jobs: one will be commissions or ot based (insurance, lawyer, doctor, car salesman, contractor, farmer, plant baw, etc), and the other will be one with great benefits (dental hygienist, paralegal, school teacher, other government employee)

When i was in the military, me and 2 of my boys had a get together planned at my house one weekend and it was all planned out until my wife got a call from a girl she met out in town wanting us to come over to her house for a party they were throwing. I tell her my 2 friends are already at my house and i wasnt going to ditch them and she says no biggie, bring them as well. We pull up to her house and she must have been waiting on us because the door flies open and she comes out all excited & bouncy wanting to hug everyone. Im not much on hugging women in front of my SO but this girl was fine as hell with a nice set of ta tas so ofcourse i was all open arms lol. We go inside and she calls her husband who was out back firing up the grill and this dude comes walking in and he was about 5'7 weighing 230-250 or so. We all just stood there in silence, i guess all wondering the same thing. We hang out for awhile and we say we're gonna head to the store for more beer, we get in my friends car and theres a long silence until the driver just turns and asks "How in the fk, did HE pull THAT?" we all bust out laughing as clearly we all had the same question. Where I come from women marry for money and security, and that's pretty much it. Looks are irrelevant, unless you look like some gay arse actor, or something. Heavy guys do well here, as long as the meet the above criteria, and are at least 6' tall.
