That actually sounds kinda awesome. Is that a thing now?

Because America has become a "don't ask what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you" place to live.

dont know many ppl who feel this way, but the amount owed back to the govt should be capped at ~$50k; with this policy, those people who have been exploited by the unaffordable college tuition can climb out of debt and contribute to the economy.

It's absolutely a thing. You should do it this week.

Jesus, what is your degree in and how long did it take you? I can't imagine that type of debt.
I borrowed $84k and began repaying last august. Graduated in Industrial Engineering.
5 years, 3 campuses.
My dad lost his job my freshman year so I had no support. I also worked through college until I got to upper level classes.

There are plenty of entry level positions available that require no degree that get your foot in the door. Spend a few years doing that and move up so forth and so on. If you really look you can find them. I know plenty of companies that do business with mine where you can start out estimating or inside sales or purchasing without a degree at all. More and more companies are not as strict on the whole " required to have a degree" positions. They may not hire a bum straight out of high school but after a few years of good work experience you can def get one of those jobs. They are easy as shite and companies understand anyone can do them and pay them less than someone with a degree.

Why do we allow this when people attaining an education with borrowed money aren't afforded that option ?
Maybe everyone should work for a bank or lending company for a semester in college. Without the governments role in student loans nobody and I mean nobody would be able to get a loan. When I graduated I had a very high salary due to an engineering degree and the max credit card I could get was $500. The reason being is I had almost no credit score. When you look at the default rates and time it takes for a lot of student loans to get paid off its a miracle that rates can be under 10%.
Students need to take personal responsibility and realize college is an investment of both money and time. Do research and choose wisely before you just jump into anything.

Is $84k the cost for in state tuition? If not, why didn't you go in state?

I have no problem paying it back and I look forward to paying back my student debt myself.
With that said, it's pretty ridiculous to expect a recent college grad to be paying 500 a month. I owe less than 35 k and I have a great credit score. 500 a month is rough.

Dafuq y'all talking about "high" interest rates?
My loans were at twelve percent minimum back in the day.
Considering the credit risk, nine percent is cheap money.

The other day Judge Judy tried a case where she asked the plaintiff a question. Said plaintiff was a young lady.
Judge Judy: "Did you take out a loan to buy the car?"
Young lady: "No! It was financed."
Seems young people have no concept about money and what they are getting themselves into. Once they figure it out, they want to start over.

First, if half these colleges weren't turning themselves into resorts we might have lower tuition rates.
All that aside its more complex than first glance. Young people are sold a bill of goods that a college degree in (insert major) is your home run ticket. Parents don't want their son being a plumber.
But Learn a trade and work with your hands and you can make bank by your 30's at the latest. Instead they move back home to the basement and work at Dillard's.

I don't have a problem with the debt. I have a problem with govt setting rates at 7.5% when people less than 10 years ago had 3%. Trying to cripple new grads but give corporations and millionaires tax breaks. Took me 2 years to pay off the interest accumulated while in school.

I took out the loan and it is my responsibility to repay it back. Had a little over 17K in loans due to losing the HOPE scholarship (which is similar to TOPS). I only took out enough to the pay for the semester and I worked full time the entire time I was in school. I sent them the last check in January to pay off my student loans. It took forever for anyone at nelnet to give me an answer on what payoff was on the loan was. Their response was you have like 42 to more payments which worked out to around 8K and some change, but to pay it off today was only 4K. I had the money so it was a no brainer to save 4K.

Because we have become a society of instant gratification with zero responsibility.
Everyone that goes to college expects to be making six figures when they graduate. Then when reality hits they want to bitch and moan and expect someone else to accept responsibility for their decisions.
After college I took at shite job on capitol hill making 33k a year but guess what? I did my research and found out that one of the benefits of said job was student loan repayment at 839 a month. I did my time until my debt was paid off and used my experience to get a better job in the private sector making bank.
The government already has a program where if you work for them for ten years your entire debt is forgiven. That's in addition to the repayment benefit that will max out at 60k.
Key word here is work. Why should the government have to forgive your debt for nothing in return?
There is also a government run student loan consolidation program that will consolidate all of your loans into one and will significantly reduce your monthly payment.
What about all those people that paid their own way through college without taking on any debt? Are we going to give them refunds?

Exactly! What about those of us who had to work thru college to pay for it? Can I get a refund? I mean, I could really use that extra cash right now!
You people who want your debt forgiven are no better than the welfare freeloaders! F U!
