I don't think it should be forgiven. Now I wouldn't mind being able to restructure to lower the ungodly interest rates I have because when I took out the loans Sallie Mae had an exclusive agreement with LSU and I couldn't shop around for lower rates. I know this policy has since been changed, I believe through Federal mandate.
I mean, there's no denying the student loan industry and the rising cost of college is a huge problem.

Also, there are already programs in place that will forgive student loans for certain professions.

Not anymore. It's a necessity nowadays
bullshite. If it was a necessity, graduates wouldn't be doing the same jobs high school drop outs can do.
Me: You work for starbucks? That's cool. You still in school?
Barista: I have a bachelors in psychology.
I know a girl who spent four years in college, got out and is a flight attendant. Cool job, but doesn't require any college. In fact, most of her co-workers don't have degrees.
Know how to write code? Guess what you can do? Get a job writing code. Start by doing simple jobs on upwork and in 6 months you're pulling in some good money. No degree required.
Finally... The easiest way to make money (and something they clearly don't teach in college) is solving problems. That's it. See a problem, solve it and it doesn't matter if you're a high school drop out or a PHd in Astrophysics, this is where the real money in the world is made.
And believe me... Every single person or business has a problem they'd pay money to solve.

There's a group of Ivy League grads refinancing student loans at lower rates to other ivy graduates. Their idea is that a Harvard grad is more likely to have a better paying job and the risk is lower.
My lowest interest loan is my wife's loan cosigned with her father at 2.8 compared to 6.8 for the rest. Currently our combined income is twice her fathers income. The risk premium on our loans was beyond what it should have been.

If only college was worth the money I spent...
:(
If I hadn't gone for Accounting, Finance or Engineering, I would have learned a trade and gone to night classes for a basic business degree.

Looks like you definitely need a refund.

I like my degree, I hate how much it cost in order to obtain it. I mean half the classes I took were really worthless and not even remotely close to my degree.

Didn't you borrow the money?
i don't feel like mine should be forgiven.. but i think one could make a compelling argument that the loans are predatory in nature and that the government has no fricking business emphasizing how important college is, pressuring kids into going to college, and profiting from it.

I will say it's odd that you can shed certain debts in bankruptcy, but this isn't one of them.
Everyone would go to school and then declare bankruptcy

Because it would increase our net income and improve our credit scores.
I guess you will also buy a house and then demand the debt be forgiven.

to get a decent job out of college vs out of highschool.. absolutely requires a degree in the current climate. with a few exceptions:
sales, construction, and as you mentioned writing code

you can loan money and then declare bankruptcy accepting the negative consequences. why can't i?

Nope. Tons of people that are in serious credit card debt or are in other dire financial straights and they don't declare bankruptcy, so why would it change with education loans?
Also, most professional companies perform background checks. In a competitive market, would you hire the kid that went through bankruptcy after graduating college?

Fair enough. I'll grant you that.
Didn't think anyone would ever agree after disagreeing on the interwebs did you?

Only for lawyers, I didn't realize it was going to be that expensive.
Yet we provide an invaluable service standing up for the common man while republicans do their damdest to frick him over without even a reach around.
Yea, you should pay mine off. At least what Obama and the Army doesn't.

I don't have any myself but I understand where they are coming from. Schooling was so cheap for the generations before that it was basically free. They didn't have to go hundreds of thousands in debt to get an education. I think it's bullshite that younger people have to pay such ridiculous amounts. So yeah, education is completely overpriced and a scam nowadays.

That's a beef I have too. Why do I need to take two bio/chem classes as an accounting major?

I'm very grateful for TOPS. I most likely would not have graduated college if I had to pay for it out of pocket.
