Why do people tie up huge chunks of income in expensive vehicles?

I see it all the time. Folks fresh out of college with a reliable vehicle trade it in for a $40,000 truck when they don't fish, hunt, or haul anything. They then want you to feel sorry for them when they complain about not having any money. If they didn't have a $600 note and higher insurance rate per month maybe life wouldn't be so tough.
Is it ignorance or do they know they will be struggling yet want to look like they are worth more money than they are?
In b4 truck nuts. It isn't just the oilfield/plant baws that do this.
If reliability isn't a concern it would be pretty cheap to buy a $1000 dollar car off of craigslist, if it lasts a year that is 83 bucks a month. Just replace it when it breaks. Women love a man who shows how financially responsible he is, right? RIGHT?

I was being sarcastic. I was in the craigslist boat for a bit, put 150k miles on a 99 corolla that I spent 1200 on. I drive a 2014 toyota now.

It's social media - their friends who make equally poor decisions post their sweet new ride on FB. The only logical choice at that point is to get a new car themselves. Then everyone acts like they could afford it in the first place.

I have no problem running a vehicle till it dies. But when I replace them I replace them with something brand new and will drive that till it dies.
But I get it. Many people are car poor....house poor...etc. School should start teaching kids how to manage their finances.

I learned this lesson when we had a 100k car sitting in the driveway unused next to a new 4runner not being used. We both were driving our weekend cars 90% of the time.
Took a loss. Sold both. Sold our oversized house. And haven't bought a vehicle over 7k since.

People are terribly insecure and care way too much about social status. They want to look, act, talk and have a lifestyle like the average person. They feel inferior not keeping up with materialistic arms race
