I just got off the phone with a co-worker who got terminated a few weeks ago.

I've never understood why people take this approach. I get that there may be some grief involved with losing a job, but it's always best to suck it up and get back out there, especially while "the engine is still hot". The longer you're out of work, the lesser chances of you getting a favorable position.

"Well, I'm going take a break for a little while, collect employment and start looking again in January", neglecting the fact that on average it takes about 2 months for the job recruitment/hiring process to complete from the day you submit an application...add a couple more weeks for you to see your first paycheck.

Why pass up on an opportunity that may be available now and may not be then?

I know of other people who have taken this approach and they ended up struggling in the long run.

Maybe it's to avoid rushing into something. Time may help people make a more logical decision.

Maybe it also has to do with remaining vacation time or severance packages.

Maybe they have plenty of money and would like some time to travel and relax?

Not everyone lives week to week.

And to give themselves time to detox.

Some people get a severance package that may cover them financially for a month or so.
Some people just had rather have some time off more than needing a new cash flow.
Some people have a spouse that can cover them for a spell.
Some people have some tasks and projects around the house that now get a few weeks to tackle them before starting a new job.

I think this is one of those threads where he knew the answer, he just wanted to have a discussion about it.

Everyone has different reasons for doing different things

ETA: was just laid off last summer and took a month or two to finally land a job so my 'vacation' wasn't my choice.. I didn't want to rush into a job that I didn't want to keep and I'm glad I didn't.. I waited it out and got the perfect job just because the timing was right.. not sure I would have had the opportunity to do it if I was already employed

Some people cherish their skills and qualifications and are in a position to cherry pick their next job. If that's you then why rush it?

I knew an attorney that was very well off, very young, only was 5 years out of law school. He took almost 2 years off to wait for the right job. He finally landed a job as in house council for a huge O&G Service company and couldn't be happier. It was well worth it for him.

I was a contract employee for years, and I did several moves and temporary work assignments away from hone that occasionally lasted multiple months. Ithe got old, and I burned out, among other things.

When I got out of that, I took two months off to find the right job.

He and his wife come from very well off families, his wife had a masters and worked part time, he took care of the kids, played golf and and tennis the rest of the time, while he was waiting for the right job. trust me, he caught a lot of shite and it started to get to him after a while.

main reason is that they get depressed and lose self esteem...there is generally a pretty heavy feeling of rejection when you lose your job.

Knowing the legal field, I'm way more impressed someone hired him after not working for two years in the field.

I'll be doubly impressed if his academics/school weren't top tier.

I'd then want to know who he knew
