I’m dealing with the same exact thing. And I love when I tell someone about it and they mention a name or 2 and those people don’t respond either. Also you hear time and time again that if “they can start right away” don’t go with that person. Which leaves me torn even though I haven’t gotten anyone like that yet. Most guys that I have at least spoken to are telling me 6 months out.

Actually had a guy return my call 2.5 weeks after I called and left a message. He apologized and asked if I’d be at my home around 2pm. This was on a Saturday. I cancelled plans and waited till 3. Dude was a no show. Didn’t even bother to call.

Anyone want to start a construction company with me???

Just curious, what are you trying to get done. I've never heard that motto.

Do it yourself? They don't want your money because the ones that actually know what they are doing are probably laughing their arses off at an "opportunity" like this.

Growing up, this is the kind of stuff that the man of the house would take care of.

frick. That.

I know how to do all forms of trade work & I am more than capable of completing a project, but I have more valuable things to do with my time than frick around with 2x4’s.

That's what I can't figure out about this whole industry. Return a damn call or at least send a text. Just say I'm sorry, but I can't help you right now.

And everyone has stories of guys who don't show up when they say they will. If you just call and say I'm late on this job and explain it, I'm sure the customer will be understanding.

I certainly get what you are saying , but to do a job right usually takes time. If you have a career and kids it’s extremely difficult to find a lot of time to work on a DIY project.

I hope everyone remembers the guys who wouldn't take a job and then bitch about no work when the economy crashes.

I always laugh at the companies who promote via radio ads or so media that no job is too big or too small.

I’m not an employer, I’m a tradesman who knows enough to take on a side job. I’m not devoting 24 hours of my weekend on doing a miserable job when I can spend 5 or 6 hours doing something much easier ???????

Amen brotha. It's a constant impedance to my company's progress, and yes, it is rampant and real in the occupations you speak of but not unique. I'm leery of a new contractor whose schedule is "wide open" at this time of year, and I take special precautions to be concise in direction and audits if so. I'll pay whatever he asks to come again if he does well. You can usually forecast results early on by their attentiveness and respect for your time- their work ethic.

People don't care to stretch themselves out; hell, they actively work against doing so. Sure, stress kills in more than one way, but, second to none, it fortifies a man when he takes it on with prudence & responsibility. It seems like we went from one extreme to the other, and I'm not being dramatic: We're dealing with an increasing lack of durability in the workplace. Work ethic is more than "working hard;" it also means a person conducts themselves efficiently, diplomatically and respectfully.

Work ethic, in its totality, is an acquired taste.

The sky's the limit if you're doing business while adhering to the Golden Rule: Answer the phone, call back, show up, follow directions, do a job that you'd want done for you.

The possible extinction of dexterity & work ethic is real, and sure, it's a bad time of the year to get the "warm months" type of work done on a whim by a good contractor, but why's nobody filling the voids? Why are those market voids growing?

Theories abound, but an indicator of it is the ever increasing chatter about income gap growth, e.g., the "haves" vs the "have nots." It seems to me that we've failed to recognize a major (if not THE major) contributing factor to the eroding chasm between the two: The "haves" vs the "will nots."

I know where a HS dropout can make $20/hr starting off and do it right now, year round, with all the perks, working on federal jobsites. They'll hafta pass a piss test, work and sweat outside, take basic training of the tasks & contractual responsibilities, but also possess very basic mechanical & dexterity skills- which are nearly impossible to train into an adult.

Right now every last one of those positions are held by smiling, happy, legal temporary immigrant workers. They're making bank in this country (let alone in their own) while the "will nots" poor mouth and bitch and swipe "ignore" on the job recruiter's phone call and worry more about a social media presence or playing a f*cking video game. They militantly support illegal immigration (while the legal temp guys hate it), and point fingers at the wealthy for not cReAtInG jObS instead of at their own selves & their incompetence & unwillingness.

As I type this, I'm sitting and waiting on a supposed plumber whom I suspect is on meth, but who's my last and only option for the week. He's over an hour late and won't pick up the phone. He's a young guy- younger than me- and I had high hopes for him regardless of his drug use. What he doesn't realize is that when he calls me 2 weeks from now and bitches and blames ME because I finally found a better bottom feeder or did it myself, I'll politely remind him of today and how he disrespected me. I'll inform him that he mistook my kindness for weakness, and that any man or woman holding the power of the purse is inherently gifted with the real power.

Our economy is irreversibly fricked if we don't right the ship, and it'll come sooner than later. I'm afraid that our inability to even find- let alone hire- a person who can glue some PVC pipe together or who can paint a wall and be paid for it is only the beginning of what's to come.

I used to think this way but the time and effort I spent finding people to do odd jobs was a bigger waste. Now we pay people to do all the jobs that are easy to get people to do, cutting the grass, planting and maintaining the beds, washing the boat and cars, cleaning the house, etc. Now when it comes time to do the small odd jobs I have plenty of time to get those done.

It must be something about you that turned them off.

When I ask a question at Ace Hardware how to fix something, the guys there volunteer to come to my house and fix it for me.
