Why do people name their kids weird stuff?

My friend and his wife are expecting their first son here soon and they started asking me my opinion on what they should name him. They had apparently narrowed it down to two. The first name they decided was Terrance, but pronounced tare-ONCE because it’s French (how pretentious of them). The second name they chose was Van Gammon, which is his MIL’s maiden name. Still never even heard that as a last name before. I didn’t want to be rude, but I straight up told them neither and asked them why they would do that shite to their kid? He’s gotta live with either of those names for the rest of his life. Terrible stuff man, people just need to name their kids normal names.
