I do it slightly higher to keep little kids from touching the TV.

Most of us that grew up in the 60-80s were used to these:

There was no hiding them from kids' hands. I guess we just knew to keep our hands off.

I had to Mount mine above the fireplace when I got a new house, there was no other place for it. The first day I was concerned. After a week, I’ve never noticed a difference. You get used to it fast and you never think about it again.

I miss those big ol console televisions that weighed a thousand pounds and was a big piece of furniture. As a kid you could lay on the carpet with a pillow and blanket and watch Saturday morning cartoons.

My setup is as close to perfect as can be. I have a 13 ft built in run of desk high counter and counter to ceiling shelves that are centered on an 18 ft long wall. Entering or leaving the room does not necessitate walking in front of the screen at all. The TV opening is in the center of the wall. The fireplace is on the adjacent to the right wall. TV Watching is uncomfortable at mantle height particularly the closer you get to the screen and a pain in the arse when people walk in front of the screen.

Do they do it because it looks good over the fireplace?

It's like sitting in the front row of a theater if it's in a small room.

i have a 65 and a 55 in my living room and the tallest is 3 feet from the bottom of the TV to the floor. I like to look straight ahead and not up watching TV's.

TV over the fireplace looks bad, and yes everyone can tell that you didn’t run the wires through the wall.

I find it annoying how so many houses have built in shelving units. These units have no practical spot for the amps and/or preamps or receiver. That stuff doesn’t need to be inside an enclosed area with no ventilation.
And forget putting towers in a good spot. Most will not image properly up against those shelves.

Anyone who responds with the “why do you care” post definitely is guilty of what the OP is lampooning
