A fireplace and its associated structure should be the centerpiece of the room with a nice mantle and decorations/pictures on it.

That's why it makes perfect sense as the room is built to feature that area and draw everyone's attention. What looks weird and tacky to me is a tv off to the side of that. Doesn't make sense from any perspective.

These threads make me wonder what the actual living room looks like for all the posts with strong opinions.

I’ve never had an issue with TV positioning. If it’s mounted higher then I’ll lay back in the chair or sofa more.

TVs mounted high is dumb

So is a fireplace where it’s cold for about 3 days

For real…frick double sided sinks you can’t even fit a pan in.

Those are from 1900s when you washed one side and rinsed the other. We got them dishwashers now.

Wood fireplace is outside. This setup is best of both.

I like to lay flat on my back sometimes so I do have a tv mounted on my ceiling.

TVs will never get bigger than 50"! You're only gonna spend your life in that LR.

What’s a farm sink? Just one of those big rectangular ones?

Kinda want one given that we have 3 kids who are getting bigger and use a lot of dishes.

While we don't have an actual farmhouse ink we do have a single-compartment sink similar in size to a farmhouse sink and I will be damned if I ever go back to a double-holer unless it has two sections each as big as what we have now.

The farmhouse sink might be the only good component to come out of the whole farmhouse fad

Good friend of mine had a girlfriend (now wife) that had their only tv on a stand like that. She let him roll it out for big tv events, then he had to roll it back to wherever he got it from. Got invited to a “Super Bowl Party” there once. Regretfully, I had to decline, forgot the excuse I gave him. Really nice new house, too.
Also had him sell his F250 because it wouldn’t fit in the garage. He got some kind of Subaru SUV or some such.

My Dad had this setup for years at his last house. Really sucked. Gave me a neck ache to watch.

Kind of like sitting in the front row in a theatre.

The viewing angle is fine if your living room is bigger than 10x10. Above my fireplace made the most sense for being able to see it from the kitchen, and also keeps the glares from sunlight off it. It also keeps it out of the reach of kids.

ETA: why do some of you think it's a fad? I've never once taken into consideration what other people do when deciding where to mount my TV's. I doubt many do. Everyone does what makes most sense and/or what's easiest.

I do it slightly higher to keep little kids from touching the TV.

I recently decided to take the flatscreen TV off the ancient TV cart. I finally chose one of the minimal stands made by Fitueyes LINK

It's well made, good welds and powder coating. Mine came with extra nuts/bolts and was easy to assemble.

It is Chinese-made and warehoused in USA. Some reviewers mention incomplete parts...not my experience.

My only concern about floor stands versus wall mounts is a home with children who will definitely try to climb the stand.

The AV "rule" is 1/3rd of the way up the screen should be ~48" off the floor. I see maybe 1 in 10 TVs at this height

I truly don’t understand it. When we bought our new place a couple of years ago one of the criteria was a place to put a TV that was NOT above the fireplace. Our realtor didn’t even get it. She thought it was odd to not want the tv over the fireplace.

Like 80% of the houses we looked at were designed and built specifically for the tv to sit 5.5-6 feet off the floor. House we ended up buying is from the 70s so didn’t have that problem. The bottom edge of my TV is like 28 inches from the floor.

Mine is over my fireplace. I don’t like it but there really isn’t another place to put it. I think that is often times the case.I hope to come up with a better option at some point but I’m stuck with it for now.
