"lives" in Manhattan and works as a musician for a conservatory there. He was joking about how he skrimps to make it each month AND has a 1.5 hour train ride to get to work every day. Then 1.5 hours to get home.
He must work outside of the city. This timing doesn’t make sense if he works there.
But to kind of answer the question, NYC is a wonderful place to live. Sure it has some drawbacks, just like every other place.

The thread go no further. If you want to make a lot of money and spend a lot of money, then big cities is where you should be. If you want to live more modestly and have fewer pressures and headaches, and smaller places is where you should live. It all depends on what you enjoy doing. I have no desire to go see musicals, plays, or very many sports events. If that was something I put high value on I would live in a town and make sure I have availed myself of those things. I don't want a very much here in Charlotte, but my needs are few.

Well...yeah. Would you move there to commute over an hour and pay double in rent what you would pay in Baton Rouge only to live in a lower standard of living?

I'm changing my opinion if you agree with me

I'm sure there are those that would think living in Alabama would be the most depressing idea on the planet and couldn't imagine that kind of lifestyle.

A guy told me when I moved to California---yeah it's expensive and crowded but there's the 3 Ws that make it all worthwhile. Weather, women and weed.
I only do 2 of the 3 so in a few years, I will retire in Wyoming or NW Idaho.

2)I would pay 5x rent in BR to live in NYC.

These people do not like to hunt or fish. A redneck will not live that lifestyle, me included.

No idea, I couldn’t pick a better place to live than 5 minutes away from my office in Memphis. My salary goes at least twice as far as it would in some other places.

I commute nearly an hour each way to go from Prairieville to my job in BR. And I’m not even “deep” into Prairieville. Those commutes are not that uncommon or alarming to me.

My brother lives in Oakland and commutes by BART to San Fran every day. He is living the starving artist lifestyle but is happier than he ever was in BR. He doesn't even need a car where he lives at(so that actually saves him money by him not paying for car insurance/gas/car payments/maintenance).

It is a really fun place to live. We moved to Sac in April and miss Oakland everyday. Your brother will have a hard time ever moving back...

The SF Bay Area is the greatest place on Earth for a young single person to be.
There are other good places as well (esp. in Europe) but it's certainly among the top.
But when you are married with kids, suddenly you're living in the burbs so you can afford a larger place. You're commuting 90 minutes each way. Your wife starts getting bored staying with the kids all day, and one day she strikes up a conversation with the plumber just to have another adult to talk with. Before long he's laying the pipe with her and you'll never know because you don't come back home until 9pm and you have to wake up at 5am the next day to catch the train so you can sleep some more on the way in.
You wind up spending your weekends as the only real family time, and everyone except for you knows your wife is banging the plumber every day. But it's all good because the reason you stay at the office so late is to give your secretary a good rogering.
But yes, while you're still single life is amazing.

Like me...he has no desire to ever return to living anywhere in the South. Now that my parents live in PHX metro by me...if he had to leave Oakland I could see him moving to PHX. PHX at least has a decent art scene he could be part of and the cost of living isn't outrageous.
I've still never visited him. Drove through Oakland once on a road trip to Fort Bragg/Mendocino but didn't have time to stop. Oakland/San Fran is def on my list of places to visit next.

Do we really have to explain to you why living in/near NYC or SF is amazing?
What good are the amenities if you can't afford them or have no free time?

My commute is about 35 minutes, but it doesn't feel that long because none of that is time stuck in traffic. That's the part that would drive me nuts.
