re: Why do people in the gym use machines for a purpose they weren't intended for?

Another baw walks in and begins doing bench press in the squat rack when their is a bench specifically for bench.
This is probably the lamest complaint of a gym user I've ever seen. You clearly haven't been working out very long as this is a very regular thing to do and nothing wrong with it at all. Its the best thing to do when you want to do bench press without a spotter.

Not when there is only one squat rack, I can't squat anywhere else. Had an ole baw doing incline bench in the squat rack the other day, luckily I had already done my squats.

Except that he was using it for a legit reason it sounds like. Ive seen guys do curls and other things in there, that is ridiculous. But at the same time, if the gym is busy I've done curls and other things in the squat rack because it was open and nothing else was.
Were there benches available that would support him if he couldn't make the lift like a squat rack would ? If so, why not politely ask him to change? I've asked people a bunch of times.
For instance, I'll routinely ask someone using an incline bench moved flat if they would move over to a flat bench because I wanted to use the incline. People will use whatever is easiest all the time and they can't know what others need/ want.

I don't bitch about much in the gym but my gym has one lying leg curl machine and it's tied up constantly by women training their glutes doing kickbacks (top pic). The funny thing is, four feet away there is a dedicated glute kickback machine (bottom pic) that is rarely used. And yes, I understand they work the glutes from slightly different angles.

You go to LA Fitness?
They only have one lying leg curl machine and that exact glute kickback machine there.
The glute kickback machine is a newer one...I actually like that one over the old one they had.

Sadly, you can't complain here. If they were doing curls in the squat rack, yes. However, the squat rack is a legit place to do chest work.
In this case, you are just gonna have to wait your turn.

I use the perched curl bench backwards sometimes. Put the bar on the seat and lean over cushion to do curls. It isolates the bicep only and works great.
We've done this for years.
Also, in my workout partners basement we have a smith machine, a power rack, a bowflex (great for isolated stuff), a leg curl machine, and free weights. That's all we have. You would be surprised at what we use some of that shite for. You use what you got and when you get to the gym you sometimes just do what youre used to out of habit.
Bottom line, if they paid their membership and are getting what they want out of the machines, its none of your concern. Get in line and wait is all I can tell you

I used to work in a gym and a coworker took a hilarious video of some idiot doing some dumbass stuff while working out. He posted it on some website and got like 2 million views.
Ironically it was always the dumbasses that would use equipment incorrectly that would complain about stuff when it would break.
