I think The biggest issue is that it has a horrible tendency to ruin people’s lives without giving them a chance.
Young people who should be given a chance to learn better.
People who did something in their past when there is no real evaluation of them currently. And no credit for any improvements.
Things like that.
I support making your opinion known with your money, but not harassing people until you get your way.

Cancel culture is me saying I disagree with X so I am going to get that person fired and destroy their life. The difference between "cancel culture" and "boycott" is much more of a gray area than most posts here claim.
When people claim that businesses are "forced into decisions they otherwise not make" they are not defining the leverage which supposedly allows that.
That leverage is perceived damage to their business in terms of boycotts by customers or clients.
What makes it such a touchy subject is that protections for workers faced with "cancel culture" fall directly in line with an area most posters here adamantly oppose: increased employee rights/protections.
The same irony, of course, holds true for the far left.

Wrong. You're way off base here.
Most of the angst regarding cancel culture comes from people being railroaded for minute infractions such as saying "all lives matter" or agreeeing with something the president says.
The anger is toward those self righteous evangelists sitting behind keyboards digging up innocuous stuff and proceeding to hound the Hell out of the employer so they have to do something.
No one is asking for protections. We are trying to point out the lunacy of offense culture.

I meant people being so touchy about comparing it to a boycott when the leverage that would cause a company to do what you suggest is that of a threatened boycott.
Right or wrong -- and I agree that cancel couture has a tendency to go way too far -- the only "defense" against a majority or group large enough to exert that kind of leverage on private companies are laws to protect workers that are in the minority.
