This is probably my favorite OT contested debate. I love the vitriol from the cyclist haters, and then tip of the hat to the trolling by the cyclists

Speaking of trolling, I think it was you who asked for a pic earlier. This is from my trip to NY doing everything the OT hates: riding in a bright pink jersey and bibs in the middle of the lane

How do you know what gay cycling cloths look like?

I know bike shorts have some padding built in because your arse would bruise if you sat on that seat for too long.

Sure, sure. That's why your arse is bruised.

I agree. I hate the gay arse clothes they wear. I especially hate when couples wear the same colors.

The clothes might look ridiculous, but if you ever took cycling seriously, I promise you that you would start wearing the kit pretty quickly.

I lift weights and am much heavier than most serious cyclists, so I'm not the guy riding 100 miles in full kit. Even if you're riding much less than that, you will want at least some basic gear (shorts, helmet, etc.), or parts of you body are going to have a bad time.

You know what kind of people get offended by other people's clothes? People that are way too deep into fashion. Guess what kind of men are into men's fashions...

I basically never wear a two piece kit anymore.

I can't do it for more than a TT distance.

1. I have a long torso and normally only wear Castelli or Assos and neither are long enough to I have to make do with Pearl Izumi or Louis Garneau.

2. I way too old (slow) to be worried about 1-2 watts

3. during cool down in the middle of summer I like to doff my jersey and drop my suspenders

4. I probably have 6k in bibs and jerseys so there is that

5. I still always abide by rule #7

Go on 20+ mile rides in a baggy cotton shirt and gym shorts and report back

Around 1973 or 1974 I peddled from Hammond to northwest of Husser, Louisiana on a steel frame Schwinn Varsity 10 speed with no toe clips wearing a cotton t-shirt, cut off jeans and barefoot.

To Husser was 20 miles one way with another 1.5 miles to a friend's camp. Total about 43 miles.

Back then we did not carry water bottles and would ask someone living in one of the houses along the road and working in their yard if we could get a drink out of their garden hose. Loranger High also had an exterior drinking fountain.

I eventually got a Raleigh International touring bike which was lighter and had some decent components and toe clips.

Cycled and ran a lot in college. Traffic was much thinner or much less dense back then.

Road a mountain bike (nylon shorts, cotton t-shirt, running shoes) daily for about 3 1/2 years on the levee from LSU Vet Med to whereever. That was before some of levee top was paved. Ride distance ran 10-70 miles. Actual levee ride for the 70 was 58 with the additional 12 miles on hard surface to and from the levee and around LSU and the lakes to add miles.

Padded shorts, a modern jersey and clip-in shoes/peddles would have been a vast improvement.

Who took the pic? Comes across like just another staged “look at me” attention seeking opportunity on Facebook.

Instead of spending tons of money on padded shorts, why not pad the seat? “We have to wear padded shorts because the seats are rock hard” but don’t do anything to actually solve the root cause. Brilliant.

It cannot be argued that the vast majority of cyclists ride around with a chip on their shoulder and hope to have a run-in with an automotive enthusiast.

This places obsession with cyclist is bizarre and unhealthy. Quit staring at my arse. I’m just trying to get some exercise or training for a charity ride.

Yeah agreed. If you are an amateur racer you have to wear the kit of your sponsors as part of the deal.

It keeps the sweat away and your arse from saddle sores.

Why do you care what I'm wearing? Seems like you spend alot of time checking other men out so there's that.

Eta come at me when you can peddle 100 miles in under 4 hours or you can do a 116 mile ride that includes both going UP the 116 switchbacks on tail of the dragon and climbing up the cherohala skyway and still have enough energy to go out for dinner later.

Pussies.
