Just thinking about the old arse ladies that work the tellers at my bank doing that makes me never want to touch cash anymore.

Back in the day when accounting entries were done manually, they closed early to balance the books. The custom has been maintained by some, although many/most have gone away from it.

History. They used to close the lobby so they could manually process transactions, balance books, etc. Not really necessary now, so most are open much later.

The short answer is bank tellers have to "balance" their cash drawer at the end of their day.

That can take up to an hour sometimes so banks allow for that additional hour of time in their schedule so that the tellers don't exceed 40 hours in their workweek which would create an overtime pay situation.

To add to this, checks used to have to be manually transported to the Fed for processing. Which is why banks used to have a cutoff time for when your deposits would reflect the same day you made the deposit. Most banks now send check copies electronically.

That being said, the only bank that I'm aware of that still closes at 4pm is Metairie Bank. There are probably more, but that is no longer the norm.

That was always going to change, but 9/11 was the kickstart. The Federal Reserve maintained it's own fleet of jets to shuffle those checks and other financial instruments around. It all came to a screeching halt for several days, resulting in the impetus to move to an electronic system.

Campus Federal closes at 5, and it used to piss me off a lot too. Seems strange to close before the average person is off of work.

Thanks for the lesson OT. However, now that basically everything is electronically done, it seems a bit outdated to close them that early.
