So do they have ham radio operators on The Walking Dead?

If not, why not?

pretty sure its because as HAM operators they are considered as part of the civil defense warning network. that is what i was told when i ran the civil defense radio check-in tests at the plant

Before the internet it was a great way to talk to people all around the world (well almost).

Imagine Tigerdroppings people/personalities without the internet. Real voices.

I remember reading a story a while back about HAM radio communications into and out of North Korea still.

I remember my neighbor having a huge map on the wall of all the areas he had talked to people in. Pins in each country/city around the world.

Okay, little Timmy. I'll try.

While I understand that some people are naturally gifted artist that can throw feces at a canvas or sculpt with used tampons, some grown ups need to know about science.

Ham radio operators, for the most part do so as a hobby. Unlike other hobbies, you have to have a much deeper understanding of the equipment than most. A golfer doesn't need to study physics, a fisherman doesn't need to know marine biology, and coin collector isn't usually a metallurgist.

As others have mentioned, emergency communications is at the core of ham radio. Most operators can make antennas from household materials and operate on battery power if needed. If you knew a fraction of what needed to be in place for the modern emergency networks to operate, you would understand the value of old men with radios scattered around the world.

Al Gore didn't pioneer the internet, hams did.
Verizon didn't pioneer wireless phones, hams did.

You see Timmy, there is a need for science and math in this world. While some folks scream at the sky, it always helps to know a guy that can communicate beyond it.

My Dad was a Ham, he was a engineer in the space program in the 60s, most of his friends were engineers and also Hams. Before the personal computer and the internet, it was the premier technical hobby with a many different facets other than just talking on a radio.

Just told my wife the story of Eduardo and “The Club”

Told her about the wall of shame he had on display.

This is true. My father has made antennas from copper and PVC pipe costing him pennies on the dollar over someone trying to sell the same thing in either CQ or the ARRL magazines. I remember fondly helping him setup di-pole antennas for 20 and 40 meter bands spanning the entire yard using nothing more than copper wire and some ceramic insulators.
