I've been a HAM since 1955 when I was 14. I have never gotten the license plate with my callsign. There are websites (and google) where you can find all information about the person holding that call sign, including name and address. I valued my privacy too much to put my callsign in the public domain.
BTW, it is a great hobby. I still get a thrill out of exchanging messages in Morse Code with a fellow HAM in remote Siberia.
