Turn computer and shite off when not working? Those laptops can come out of the car too.
Posted on 8/8/24 at 1:45 pm to DavidTheGnome
Because they don't pay for the gas.
Posted on 8/8/24 at 1:47 pm to NatalbanyTigerFan
Because they’re not powered on

I really don't think that cops get designated break time. They are still on call while eating lunch or whatever. If they get a call they may need their computer immediately and not wait for everything to boot up, on top of keeping everything cool. When they start their car after being off shift I would imagine there is a protocol of cooling the car down before stating everything up again.

Former leo…. Used to leave it running for reason stated above. Needed to make sure I could respond as quickly as possible at any given moment. Keeping equipment cool was second to that. Since technically I was paying for my own gas as a taxpayer as well I took that seriously and didn’t leave it on unnecessarily on duty. Off duty I removed everything until I went back on shift again. No designated lunch breaks either. Eat when you can and some days you didn’t. I also went the extra mile and waxed my car once a week and kept it looking as it should because of the fact that it was paid for by the public.

If they had to pay for the gas, you can bet your arse they wouldn’t leave them running.

1. Because tax payers pay for their gasoline. 2. They keeping the AC going.

Right path but no.
It’s because when their cruiser first starts up, it takes an insane amount of time for all the electronics to boot up. When on duty, they need to be ready to act at any given second.

They probably use less than half a gallon an hour idling. So $1.50 an hour? Yeah I'd leave it idling even if i had to pay and made a cops salary.

Some of you guys probably get pissed when you see fire trucks at the grocery store too lol. The gym by my house 500 feet from the fire station. The firefighters drive the trucks over there. Response time is everything.

X number of cars X number of hours on duty = a lot of money.
I’ve told this story before. I worked for a large utility service company and they decided to give me the fleet department. The safety guys made every crew leave one truck running on location at all times to have a spot to cool off in the summer. We were spending about $90k per week on excessive idling fuel consumption by the time it went across all the business units.
They sent that safety guy packing after they saw the bills.

I've heard the reasons why. I'm just not convinced there isn't something better that can be done. It costs tax payers a shite load of money.

The same reason that the DoD is able to buy factory deleted diesel pickups when no one else can. It’s the government.

The inside of a car does get super-hot, very quickly, but the "electronics" execuse is overused, and likely untrue.

When they’re in it, I get it. But when they aren’t, excluding K-9 units, they just need to put a APC in for the electronics if it’s that big of a deal. Fuel cost is only one part, other maintenance is accelerated as well.
This is why I think they need to buy more PHEVs for LEO vehicles.

same reason other emergency response vehicles are constantly running when out of the stations. the electronics in the vehicles would drain the batteries very quickly if it wasn't running or plugged into a shoreline at the station
