Except 'muricans are pretty far down the list when you look at worldwide per capita alcohol consumption.

But, yeah, you and the OP nailed it there. This is nothing but a dumb 'Murica thing.

The end result of abusing any of those is pretty much the same.

Alcohol is legal cause it has a marketing value. You don't like baseball too much? That's ok. Come drink a cold one while watching the team.

There's no marketing value for illegal drugs.

Anyway interesting discussion on here. Good stuff.

They are trying to make kratom illegal in some states. It's absolutely ridiculous. Kratom is a plain leaf that has been ingested for thousands of years, with no side effects. It works on opioid receptors. No matter how much you take it is only mildly intoxicating, equivalent to one or two drinks, it does not alter your senses like alcohol though. This leaf could totally replace over-the-counter pain reliever's like Tylenol, antidepressants, and mild prescription drugs. People who are actually addicted to heroin can use this to come off, and many claim that it has saved their lives. The problem is that it gets mixed into a big house bills with synthetic drugs, and lawmakers don't know any better.

It's actually worse than crack or heroin

A variety of social, physical and psychological problems that are caused by drugs were examined by a panel of experts, who concluded that alcohol, heroin and crack were the most harmful to others while heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine were the most harmful to individual users, CNN reported.

Dr. Petros Levounis, director of theAddiction Institute of New York at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, agreed with the study findings.

"Both in terms of the medical consequences as well as societal consequences, I agree that alcohol ranks very high in overall harmfulness,"he told the News. "Alcohol has tremendous repercussions in our society in terms of drunk driving and societal consequences.”

Twenty drugs were scored on 16 criteria – nine related to the harms that a particular drug does to an individual and seven to the harms a drug does to others. All the drugs were scored out of 100 points, and overall, alcohol came in the highest, at 72 points, according to The Lancet. Heroin came in second with 55 points and crack cocaine took third place with 54 points.

While cocaine and tobacco were found to be equally harmful, LSD and ecstasy were found to be the least harmful, according to BBC.com.

Hey! Someone who gets it!

Booze is legal because it's something that can be used in groups, used for long periods of time, it's not something you have to smoke/cook/snort/shoot/ect. It's not like you can call up your friends and say "hey lets go tot he bar and take a pill" because it would be over in seconds. If you go to the bar and have a couple of beers, you're there for hours. Funny thing about alcohol is it just happens to be the worst thing you can possibly use. Weed is an interesting one but you have to smoke it, and getting people to smoke something for a long period of time is difficult. Passing a J around a campfire is over in just a few minutes, the only thing that keeps the conversation going is the beers.

Here is a funny quote from DEA chief Chuck Rosenberg and a good example of why some drugs are legal and some aren't.

quote:

“What really bothers me is the notion that marijuana is also medicinal—because it’s not,” he said. “If you talk about smoking the leaf of marijuana—which is what people are talking about when they talk about medicinal marijuana—it has never been shown to be safe or effective as a medicine.”

Want to compare the cost-benefit ratio of alcohol to the cost-benefit of "street drugs"? Maybe you should start there.

Nearly everyone uses alcohol. Some people's lives are ruined by theirs or someone else's use of it.

What would happen if nearly everyone used crack or heroin? shite would completely fall apart.

It's a ridiculous analysis.

You might as well say that cars are worse than crack or heroin.

The same can be said for heroin and crack. In fact alcohol is the true gateway drug. Portugal decriminalized all drugs and use dropped.

You're assuming that everyone that uses crack or heroin are having problems. That couldn't be further from the truth. The vast majority of users live perfectly normal lives.

I understand what you're saying, but nowhere close is marijuana and heroin. I think marijuana should be legalized, especially considering alcohol is worse.

But hey, preachers and the war on drugs tell us smoking a joint is much worse than getting drunk and starting a bar fight.

Alcohol is a more dangerous drug than both crack and heroin when the combined harms to the user and to others are assessed, British scientists said Monday.

Well, this is kind of surprising, but I pretty much though alcohol is worse than marijuana. I mean, has any group of stoned potheads every started a melee or brawl? You can't deny alcohol can lead to some pretty serious behaviors, but hey, it's legal.

100% correct, i started using kratom after something resembling fibro started bothering me, i just could`t sleep, went to several docs tried requip, lyrica, and several other prescribed meds. Nothing came close to kratom and the thing is never has there been 1 case of an overdose death in it`s 1000 years of use but different government agencies are hell bound to have it made illegal and the biggest proponents of taking it off the shelves are drug rehab centers, i wonder why? (sarcasm)

It's legal because prohibition was a massive failure, just like the war on drugs has been

It's 100% true. You're in denial if you think otherwise. You're going to believe what you want to believe no matter what the facts so having this conversation is pointless if you're just going to arbitrarily deny things without at least making an attempt to back them up.

If you look at the motivations behind alcohol prohibition, it's scary how similar it is to our current war on drugs.
