Why did these people wait 2 MONTHS to send distress calls?

Why didn't they take a sat phone, spot beacon, or something similar with them?
They had a years worth of food, water purifiers, and a radio so they were prepared. But, they didn't take along an easy way to get rescue if they needed it? Strange.
