I think most folks realize that some were treated quite well. But many/most were not.

One example doesn't excuse the practice of people owning other human beings, regardless of how they were treated. I don't care if it's whites owning blacks or blacks owning blacks.

Not to mention slaves were still considered property. They were owned by someone who were able to do whatever they wanted with them, because... They owned them. It wasn't like they were able to decide they didn't like working for free so they could up and decide to go get another job or start their own business.

They were not allowed to earn their own money so they could go buy whatever they wanted. A black slave wasn't able to get their kids a good education.. But I guess as long as no crack and whip was needed then they didn't have it that bad.

It wasnt. Slavery would have gradually ended over next 20 years or so

That may have been the case, but we will never know for certain.

But the yankees decided we needed to fight a war and have millions die over it.

That’s not correct, the South decided they wanted their own nation first, and used force to drive out Federals.

The North then decided they couldn’t and invades the South.

I’m just making fun of the revisionist “historians” who look at history with the knowledge we have today. Slavery was bad and back then people didn’t think it was. But we’ve progressed through society to understand that slavery was an evil institution. Same way we understand that tanks are a better way to cover more ground when attacking an enemy.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people knew it was bad. Didn't they have a whole abolitionist movement for a long time?

What was legal about secession? The Nullification Crisis and the Hartford Convention showed secession was not OK.

“...they felt that that stuff was the property of SC”
—“They felt” doesn’t equal legal. AOC “feels” we shouldn’t have borders.

True. There were not many contractors around when Rome was built.. Or when the pyramids were constructed.

If we didn’t fight a war over slavery, we would have fought one over another issue.

There was no scenario where we were allowed to be different.

Who is "the South"?

Prove that this is what "the South" believed.

We will see who is "Not too bright" here.

I never got it. A slave cost around 4-5 years of a workers entire salary. Plus you had to feed and house.

Seems hiring migrants like the north and west did, would be cheaper.

So you saying the railroads done it right by hiring coolies (no racist, I'm asian). F Stanford. The coolies were treated worse than slaves.

That’s true.

Slaves were an expensive investment, and were generally treated as such.

How old? 100? At what point do you just admit the Republican party is the party of old, racist, white people and own it?
