was it just because they had nasty greasy hair they never washed? is there any other reasoning behind this?

Luscsiously thick curly hair master race checking in.

It's nigh untameable when it gets long.

I fell asleep on the couch last week wearing a hoodie and halfway through the night pulled the hood over my head. Honestly it was some of the best sleep I've gotten in months.

Helped keep your head warm if you didn't have central heat.

I wear a hat while sleeping when tent-camping during the winter.

Sleeping in a hoodie with the hood over your head/face is one of life’s simple pleasures

Why do people wear caps inside at all? It's completely stupid.

As said already, warmth is the correct answer.

ps - my grandparents slept with knit hats on during the winter because my grandfather was too frugal (cheap) to turn on the heater.

That wouldnt prevent bugs, might even attract them due to additional warmth.

To keep warm people wore caps to bed. Something like 30% of heat loss occurs from an uncovered head.

Try camping in the North of the nation in January or February and you'll understand why people wore caps to bed before any kind of heat except a wood stove or fireplace was available. Modern heating systems are when night caps went the way of the dinosaur.
