Vehicles are routinely getting 200k on them without major malfunction. That's pretty damned good. For perspective, that's driving coast to coast almost 100 times. I think people are just a lot more spoiled now.

I think most of them are. Toyota has design and engineering in the US, and I think BMW does as well.

I don't agree with the premise. Most cars are more reliable than ever save a few brands (Chrysler) The 70's and 80's produced some really crappy vehicles.
The deal is all manf will have certain amount of defects. (not possible to avoid) The difference is the consumer who experiences the defects have a much larger platform in which to bitch on.
For instance, if a one or two guys posted here they had a tranny go out on a F-150, thousands of people would read that and take away that ford tranny's must suck.
The various auto forums are something that really amplify the unsatisfied owners voices.

I use a similar analogy. I use the Land Rover v the Landcruiser.
Most Whirlpools(including Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, Roper, etc) and Speed Queens were tossed because the wife wanted a nicer looking machine.
Most Samsungs and LGs that are tossed (and new post 2009 Whirlpools) are tossed because they broke and would cost more to fix than to replace (60% of new unit cost is generally the most anyone will pay for repair, 75% for the cheap whirlpools).
Cars are the same way. The ones we see the most reliable are also the ones that take longer to adapt.
Historically that's the point of Maytag. They marketed themselves as the old reliable units.
Speed Queen rarely markets at all.
As a whole though the auto industry is better not worse. Like mentioned before a modern KIA, is likely more reliable than a 2000 model car of any type. You could take a 2000 Kia and say that about a 1980 car as well. It's crazy to think about. We do in many ways let nostalgia blind us. How many transmission changes did Gramps old Chevy have anyway?

Not entirely true. Toyota, Nissan, and Honda especially do a lot of design and engineering in the US. Most of them are even built here.
Rumor is that Toyota's next plant will be in western Tennessee.

Last time I rented a UHAUL trailer, the printed in the contract that their trailers are not to be towed by any Ford Explorer.

Yes and no. Yes, their reputation prior to 2000 was putrid and some of that, no doubt, has carried over and remained ingrained in the minds of buyers. But their new models and designs are all evaluated against the competition by independent reviewers every year and they still place at the bottom of most categories, without fail.

Of course they do, as do pretty much all manufacturers. However, their failure rates are still significantly higher per specified number of units produced versus other makes.

I don't know, I know many of the older models bumpers would fail if the hitch was on it.. I don't think they even have that option anymore..
You can only put a receiver hitch on the Newer model Explorers now..

because they had some stupid wheel related re-call years ago and U-haul made that rule and never backed down. My parents had a sport track back then.
I have always lied when renting trailers from U-haul. I needed to tow a Caddilac Deville with a Tacoma. even when I said the pulling vehicle was a F-350 it said no-go.
So I said I was towing a Model-A and it let me get it with the Tacoma.
Then I slowly pulled a Car bigger and heavier than my truck home 375 miles in 9+hours.
(with an Explorer they won't rent at all, have to pick up and drop off with something else.)

Against other trucks, it's still at the bottom of most rankings. But trucks tend to be different animals in that they are generally pretty reliable even when made by a mostly unreliable brand. GM also comes to mind here, though they have been better across the board in the last few years.
