I know those aren't the only tax variables, but those are big and and seems to be the focus in this thread.
I concur, if I had kids in school here I might be a little less butthurt about it

My kids thank you in advance for your contribution to the school system.

Oh I completely agree.
But you're crazy if you think a Harvard degree doesn't carry more weight with employers universally.

I grew up in NOLA. Always wanted to leave. Left after Katrina. Lived in Stank Loser, Misery and Austin, TX. Couldnt wait to get back to NOLA.
TX was OK but strip malls and track housing gets old after a while. Austin is by far the most beautiful area of TX and I still wanted to leave. Its very easy to be in the middle of the city and still feel isolated. TX doesnt have the culture and neighborhood feel that NOLA does. NOLA has the best festival culture as well.
People who are educated often prioritize $$$ over happiness or assume that you need the former to get the latter. TX vs NOLA is a tradeoff between lifestyles.
If you like new things, shopping, money, material culture, perfect infrastructure, dont care for history, dont care for architectural significance and value image and posturing over being genuine and real, then TX is for you.
If you like old things, culture, close-knit neighborhoods, locally-owned business, history, laid-back lifestyle, music, drinking, uniqueness and dont mind shitty infrastructure and dont care for intelligent conversation then NOLA is for you.
Basically if you want to live the typical consumer driven American Dream then TX all the way.
If you want to live life in vivid color, to its fullest, NOLA all day.

I've thought about a hypothetical before such as If I had to pack it all up and drive to a state adjoining Texas, where would I go?
No homer here but I came up with NWArky (Fay/SD/Bentonville corridor) and outside of that it's really a hard question to answer. Tulsa maybe?
If anyone living in AR/LA/OK/NM today played the same game, most would answer "I'm going to Texas".

Because the the employers that hire educated Louisiana people know better than to set up shop in a corrupt cesspool like the Pelican State.

A lot of LSU grads go to Houston, Dallas, Austin, Atlanta, Memphis, and Nashville. Every one of those towns have more corporate white collar jobs than any Louisiana city and reasonable costs of living.

Oklahoma City is seriously underrated. I'd move there for the right money

Check the Alumni Associations locations/membership and you get the picture of where they are.

I've got a couple of relatives(retired,) that built cabins up there, looks and sounds beautiful, would take a look

it's funny, just going hrough there it doesn't look appealing to me but everyone I know that had to go there for their job, dreaded as if it were a sentence, but once they got settled in there love it and don't want to leave

I like Oklahoma City as well. The people are nice, the costs of living seem reasonable.
It's economy is largely based on upstream oil and gas, which is struggling a bit now. It won't be like that forever.

I love LA but there is no doubt standard of living is better across the board in Texas by almost every objective measure
We were moved to Kingwood by the company I worked for after Katrina. Originally from Nola, but living in Slidell at the time we left. We bought a much nicer and larger house in Kingwood for the same price we sold, and our kids attended public schools that were as good or better than any private school in greater Nola.
We elected to remain here when my employer decided to return to greater Nola area three years ago. We still miss regularly seeing family and friends, but nothing else.

Y'all must be poor if you have to move to a shithole like Texas to get a job

Because they are smart. They know arithmetic. In Louisiana we think 2+2 equals 22.
