You can do this or you can simply tweak the academic requirements for qualification and more importantly, the amount covered. I had the award and I don't remember the standards being very high - at all.

Louisiana public universities are fairly cheap. Why should a student with a 2.5 and 18 ACT get full tuition covered? The student with a 3.7 and 27 ACT gets the full coverage.

For example:

Highschool GPA - 2.5, ACT - 20 = 1/4 tuition covered
Highschool GPA - 3.0, ACT - 23 = 1/2 tutiion covered
Highschool GPA - 3.3, ACT - 25 = 3/4 tution covered
Highschool GPA - 3.5+. ACT - 26+ = full tuition covered.

San Antonio, Fort Worth, Austin all have some sort of local flavor to them. Dallas and Houston have multiple pockets of neighborhoods with character to them. To say an entire state is bland is pure arrogance.

I guess I'm just basing my statement off of the countless people who I know that moved to The Woodlands, it was obviously a generalization and as I said was probably the right decision.

Actually no. Texas is trending that way. Comes with the carpetbaggers. In 15 years Texas will have a moonbeam governor and be practicing "dig a hole too deep to fail" politics as well

Well, he's right that property tax is one cog in the state funding wheel here. An advantage of having no state tax is great and being able to deduct property tax from Federal income is just one more positive. Sales tax is around 8.25% almost anywhere you go which is palatable as well.

Overall, when you add up all the positives of Texas living it's pretty Goddamn great, wouldn't you agree?

I moved here immediately after graduating. I received job offers in Texas and LA and the lowest Texas offer was 15% higher than the highest LA offer. Add in no state income tax, similar CoL, and a generally better QoL, and it seemed an easy decision that I have yet to regret 9 years later.

Easy I went to school to work in the oil field as a geologist. Fun fact, Edwards and the past governors of this state have sucked the O&G industry dry with tax and regulation because they think our marsh degradation, etc. are 100% the oil fields fall out and so they should pay up.

So they move to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio etc... where they are wanted. So what happens to me and hundreds of other PETE, Geologists, Landmen, we leave for a job. Simple.

I'm just one person in one industry that probably translates easily to other industries. So unless you want to work on movie sets or for a corrupt, incredibly inefficient state government, you may look elsewhere.

somewhat, it's no Utopia, but then few places come close to that, what makes it a little more palatable to me is that I can drive out to the airport and get on a jet and leave for a while, anytime I want to I'm at the point to where being able to deduct property tax has little to no impact(not a brag,) it's just that tax laws keep getting sneakily crafted to ensure that the middle class funds everything just taking up for the home state I guess

My degree from LSU was a source of great pride for me...until a few weeks later when I realized what ALL college grads eventually do...the school on the degree is completely irrelevant to those who have one...unless it says "Harvard _____"

Overrated, Yale too.

They hand out a bunch of Russian Literature degrees. Not impressive.

I prefer a tax structure that allows for choice. You can choose to pay property taxes, whereas you are forced to pay income taxes.

I know those aren't the only tax variables, but those are big and and seems to be the focus in this thread.
