Honestly, the entire idea of a small, relatively underpopulated island becoming the world power that they did is a stretch for most of history. Britain made the gains they did due to ruthless ambition and efficiency. When those values fell out of favor it was only a matter of time until they fell. The same story is playing out in the U.S. and has throughout history.
To people on the outside looking in it’s easy to spot where they went wrong and ridicule them for what seem like obviously poor decisions (as we make the same mistakes all over again in our own countries and personal lives).

I firmly believe the U.S. will reinvent itself a la the Roman Empire into a less democratic iteration before it simply dissolves. It’s just too easy and would actually improve efficiency and effectiveness of administration (assuming any level of competence exists).

it’s not just the UK. All of Europe is pretty much irrelevant.

To answer your question, I believe the British caste system did them in. Their leadership became too stodgy to react as the world economy transitioned from Colonial Mercantilism to Capitalism
WWI decimated their financial reserves and population making it incredibly difficult to maintain their empire
The UK is still the #7 wealthiest nation in the world

Socialist societies have killed the entire European continent. Spain is another example, but they were on different timeline. Their empire crumbled and 99.9% of that country is HARD left.

Sounds like the Germans couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper sack right now. Perhaps their ground reserves might put up a fight, I must confess my ignorance on these matters... but they are a leech on NATO.
