its probably because a lot of people aren't even aware of the existence of powerball until the jackpot becomes so big that the media begins covering it.

some other people might just do it for the novelty or shits n giggles of being a part of the biggest jackpot ever.

I'm just the opposite. I wouldn't mind winning up to, say, $10-20 million. But much more than that and you'd have to completely change your life. You'd have to hire bodyguards, worry about the safety of your family, not see friends or family whenever you wanted. And those friends and family are likely to be resentful no matter how much you gave away. Not worth it to me.

These powerball thread really pull the dumb ones out of just lurking

Because when it gets this big it becomes an event. The media heavily covers it and everyone wants in on the fun.

So it gets to 700 million and people go crazy buying these tickets. Are they thinking "Nah, I don't want to try for 60 or even 100 million; I have no use for that". "But 700 million? I'm all over that"

Really I mean $700M won't do anything for me that 25M won't.

Didn't you take statistics in college? Your odds at winning are I believe 1 in 250,000,000. This means that once it gets over that price you're on the positive side in terms of value on your money. Right now you're getting better than 3:1 on your money, you'd be stupid not to buy right now even considering the incredible low odds at winning.

Many may stats classes. You now more than 99% of those who bur are not thinking about that. Your odds are the same to hit whether is 60 mil or 600 mil. With more people buying as it rises, your odds of splitting also go up. BUt that's not the point of the OP. It is:

Are they thinking "Nah, I don't want to try for 60 or even 100 million; I have no use for that". "But 700 million? I'm all over that"

eddieray: Exactly!! I've been saying this. Like the 90 million a few weeks ago isn't gonna get your trashy arse out of debt and set you up for life.

Yes it will. 700 is a completely different lifestyle than 25.

It's because value and worth are subjective. To most, it isn't worth wasting money on a shot in the dark regularly on the lottery. But to many it because worth it it try if the money reaches a certain level because of the novelty of it. This level is different for many people. For me, when it got 400 million I bought a ticket and I rarely play.

There is a comedian who actually has a skit on this. Can't remember his name but it goes like this. He is sitting in Waffle House picking his own numbers for the powerball. The waitress comes up and says damn that's a lot of tickets.

He says I only got 10 how many did you get? The jackpot is 50 million tonight. She says i didn't get any, I only play it if it gets on up there. He says wait a minute; so you are telling me that you are too good for 50 million and if it's not more then that; your content with staying here and going in the back and messing with them damn hashbrowns.

Then he ends it by saying "If I was a 35 year old woman working at Waffle House, my whole damn check would go to lottery tickets".
