For $20 bucks you can join in the conversations of "what would you do with 900m". It's entertainment that everyone in the country is involved in.

I don't buy lottery tickets regularly because I know that it's just throwing my money away. I only buy when it's a huge jackpot because it's fun to be a part of it and fantasize for a little while what it would be like to be filthy fricking rich. Even then I only buy 1 ticket per drawing.

Those playing weekly are suckers. Those going to the gambling boats daily or weekly are suckers. Those of us playing once or twice a year are just fine. Whoever wins this type of money is unbelievably lucky...no doubt. I'll gladly take that unbelievably lucky title if I win it.

The thing is, the expected value is still negative. It isn't $800 million, it's the lump sum value (which is much lower) and that is before taxes are taken out. Plus there will probably be more than one winner you have to split it with.

Each person who wins *might* get a hundred mil out of it. Maybe. Divide that by the odds of winning and it isn't even close to being worth it.

Exactly. I don't think any reasonable people think they actually have any real chance winning. Even if I don't win I am still getting something for my money. It's the same thing as going to the casino or racetrack. I don't go often, but when I do go I budget out money that I expect to lose, and I mark that down as the cost of entertainment. If I happen to win great. If I don't whatever. I expected it.

The same reason why we suddenly have 550 lottery threads with the above-it-alls and statistics prodigies trying to drop the knowledge bombs.

Crazy high jackpots gets crazy high amounts of publicity. Wild, isn't it?

Obviously some people are too cool to spend $10 on lottery tickets a few times a year.

Because many people don't think about the lottery on a regular basis, so they don't participate. When the pot gets this big there are constant reminders.

And co-workers and friends start getting together and putting in money to buy tickets. It's just all in good fun.

. Are they thinking "Nah, I don't want to try for 60 or even 100 million; I have no use for that". "But 700 million? I'm all over that"

Exactly!! I've been saying this. Like the 90 million a few weeks ago isn't gonna get your trashy arse out of debt and set you up for life.

When it gets this big it becomes a major story. Were you thinking about or hearing about the Powerball a few weeks ago? Probably wasn't even on your radar.

m just the opposite. I wouldn't mind winning up to, say, $10-20 million. But much more than that and you'd have to completely change your life. You'd have to hire bodyguards, worry about the safety of your family, not see friends or family whenever you wanted.

literally 15% of the population of Beverly Hills is worth over $200 million and hardly any of them have bodyguards or worry. If you live in a place where the average nest egg is $50 million there's really not much to worry about. I guess if you want to stay in shitty Louisiana you might need a bodyguard but why would you want to do that? why wouldn't you moved to midtown Manhattan or Paris or Beverly Hills?

Didn't you take statistics in college? Your odds at winning are I believe 1 in 250,000,000. This means that once it gets over that price you're on the positive side in terms of value on your money. Right now you're getting better than 3:1 on your money, you'd be stupid not to buy right now even considering the incredible low odds at winning.
