Why are so many electronics made in Asia?

I know labor is cheaper there, but I would think electronics are not hand made. Robotics puts them together.

Labor cost is all that really matters in any electronics business. That is, after they value engineer the shite out of everything.

Businesses are subjected to much less stringent regulation.

Because it was the cheapest place available with the qualified labor pool required to make it.

My motherboard was handcrafted by the finest bespoke Chinaman. Before you know it, he will hit puberty, and move on to GPUs.

Government regulations are virtually nonexistent, labor costs are cheaper, they have historical precedent as being a manufacturer so it was just easier for them to evolve in that role, and in certain instances the electronics are of dubious quality but acceptable enough to sell.

All of this just helps lower the price of doing business.

It’s amazing what the chinamen can build even while being flogged and blindfolded.

Extremely low costs of slave labor and 12 hour a day sweat shops. Couple that with no job safety regulations and you get your iPhone.

There is not an advancement in human history that doesn’t involve massive human suffering and labor.

The current technological revolution is no different.

The rate technology is changing its basically necessary. Massive assembly lines able to instantly scale for demand and change prices and parts and upgrades on the fly. I understand there’s a contingent of people who refuse to acknowledge reality and pretend that without Samsung and Apple Asian countries would be giant wealthy prosperous countries full of free middle class families. But that’s just not the case. The world doesn’t work that way.

There’s some pros. Many of these poverty stricken third world countries have industry and purpose now. Rather than tribal ware fare or just death and starvation.

I have to imagine if iPhones were exclusively made in the USA they’d cost a hundred thousand dollars a piece, they’d be impossible to find, and they’d maybe get a new model every 5/8 years.

Instead they cost a couple hundred bucks, there’s a new model every year. And they’re sold everywhere from electronic stores to gas stations.

It saddens me how much Americans absolutely take for granted in 2020. We live in the best country in human history and we are right in the middle of a massive technological and communication revolution turning point that’s akin to the industrial revolution or the invention of the printing press and instead of marveling and enjoying that together we’re fighting over the most trivial meaningless shite and complain about how much we hate the technology we don’t even deserve

^^^^^^

Electronics require heavy metals that are toxic. In the U.S., our EPA REGS to deal with this are stringent. China? They don't give a frick.

Companies like Foxconn house their employees in dorms on site. They can run their lines 24 hours a day and scale to meet production targets at the drop of a hat.

At the same time their workforce won't make demands for social issues or diversity and go on strike. They just work. And if they don't work there's a billion more that will.

Ultimately, we’re just fricking our future selves for the sake of short term luxuries.

Because Asians are small and their slim nimble fingers can make smaller electronics than our ponderous sausage-like Western fingers can.

"When you look at the Asians, the Asian is very gifted in creation, creativity and inventions. If you go to Japan or any Asian country, they can turn a television into a watch. They're very creative. And you look at the Indians, they have been very gifted in the spirituality." --Reggie White

This is the bullshite they want you to believe. We could absolutely do it here at home if we had to. The phones would probably be better too.

I love when people believe the free market can accomplish anything.... except decent conditions for workers.

East Asia is a hotbed for electronics specifically because of cost AND engineering. Engineering talent, that is. Math and engineering are generally more highly valued in East Asian schools than in western schools. Japan lost the cost edge over the years, but Best Korea and Taiwan quickly filled that gap. China basically just copies everything. Lots of low cost, very little original talent.
