I know the common answer is that its run by government, but that's not completely honest. Teachers are paid by the taxes in their state, so naturally if you live in a low tax state, you'll make less money overall.

But teacher quality varies considerably. Is a math teacher in a Advanced Math class in high school equal to a 1st grade teacher? According to many states that appears to be the case.

And nobody ever brings up this fact: in most rural counties/parishes, schools, retail, hospitals are the only jobs available. So naturally you are always going to have many people in education if they chose to stay in that area.

I feel like education has shifted from getting qualified candidates to getting whoever is available. We complain about liberal indoctrination, but we created a system where those who are the most likely to be liberal shape our kids mindsets.

i don't know about all the rest of that.

but i'll definitely agree that paying teachers nearly the exact same salary despite years of experience, course taught, certifications, and test results is DUMB.

Starting in the 60's there was a left wing takeover of media and education. Its not accidental, they identified the best way to move propaganda and took over those institutions.

You can thank the admin-heavy school boards for that

Forgot to add it. But yes, not paying more for years of experience does not exactly inspire loyalty. You can play the "if you dont like it, find another job". But that's not solving this institutional problem.

i also don't understand why principles in some of these big school districts make $100-150k a year. I mean, besides being a principle or a teacher in what other field would a principle be worth half that.

and don't get me started on ISD Superintendents pulling down twice what principles make. Makes 0 sense.

pay principles and administrators MUCH less.
THEN pay talented and hardworking teachers more.

Eh, they're really no different than other managers in other fields. The responsibility is why they're getting paid.

My issue is that there's plenty of waste in these school systems that could go to better salaries or facilities. Most places don't have funding problems, they have spending problems

Schools jobs are union jobs for people who went to college. It promotes complacency and entitlement. There's really no incentive to do better than average or move up the ladder, unless you want to be in administration.

I have a masters plus my +30 and I'm certified to teach through high school along with Montessori certification and I make 470 more than someone with only a bachelors degree and same amount of experience. Most places in Louisiana are 2k to 2.5k more which still is not a lot. Having a masters degree essentially means the teacher does not plan on staying in the classroom long.
They have plenty of shitty teachers who give the good ones a bad rap. Did I go into education to make money? No, however as my district continues to ask me to do more and add more students into my classroom, I feel I deserve more

I'll never understand why a district that graduates less than 900 students per year needs almost 100 upper level administrative staff (I'm referring to the K12 system of my home parish).

i still think most of the principles and administrators are drastically overpaid based on their resumes.

ohh i agree on the money being spent in the wrong places being the main problem. a lot of it's on silly outdated programs the kids nowadays don't give a shite about or don't need.

like at my wife's school. they full time employ 4 theater teachers. wtf?

Because, by and large, we are using the same educational system that we have used for the last 75 years. Nothing about our lives are the same now as it was 75 years ago, but our educational system is.

Teacher unions, like all other unions, have lost some strength in recent years, but the pay structure remains the same.

Why, because it's easy.

let's say you went to a true market system, and allowed each teacher to negotiate their own compensation. Who would they negotiate with?

Let's say the principal. A good sized high school might have 75 teachers, coaches, etc on the faculty. You could give the principal a budget and say, spend it on salaries how you wish.

We would need to teach the principals how to have the business sense to do that.

We can certainly do that, but it would be a huge change from how we do things now.

Teacher salaries seem low compared to other industries, but they only work 9-10 months a year. How much would your job pay if you took a two month summer break + other holidays every year?
